I was thinking that it could be a M32 mult-shot grenade launcher (a six round "revolver" that fires 40mm grenades). Anyone got any opinions as to something that comes closer?

An AA-12 with frag rounds. Go look it up. It's about as close as it gets.

ah, this thread again.
Yeah, any assault shotgun using explosive shells is probably relatively close, but ultimately any 30mm repeater firing armour piercing explosive snub ammo will do

Bolters are not grenade launchers, even though it is fun to call them that. Bolts don't fragment, do more damage indoors, or kill multiple people. They are more like a kind of super hollow point. In the same way a fire cracker can do massive damage if held in a closed fist but not even hurt if held in an open hand the explosive charge in a bolter can do horrific damage when it detonates inside living tissue, but would be unlikely to do anything more than flesh wounds if it detonated next to someone.

There's no real life equivalent to a bolter. The closest probably is the Mk.19, but as stated above there are still key differences.

I agree with the AA12, rapid-fire assault shotgun and its bulk even makes it look a little like a bolter (of course its still a bit of a stretch). I just love playing the Killing Floor and using it on zombies, haha
