The DE Chillwind spell states that "any units taking casualties may not shoot next turn".

So say Chillwind got cast on a Warp Lightning Cannon or a Doomwheel, and it suffered a Wound. Would that count as a "casualty" and hence mean the unit could not shoot next turn? Or is it just counted as a Wound against the War Machine and not a casualty, meaning it would not effect shooting?

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Read the warmachine rules. Crew are just wound counters and thus you are not taking casualties.

I wanted to clarify, as since you are technically "removing" a crew member, our DE player was under the assumption that Chillwind could shut down War Machines.

Tell him to cast bladewind instead. 2D6 S4 close combat attacks.
You'd be rolling to hit and wound aganist the crew stats.
In general, it takes the machine out. And no, you don't get to use re-rolls for the sorceresses hatred.
