Okay - I just played a game in which my war altar was in melee with 13 Lorian seaguard with full command. I had the charge - missed entirely on my attacks, even the re-rolls for hatred. Neither side wounded.
Combat res:
Me - +1 for charging.
Him: +2 for ranks, +1 for banner - he wins by 2
I rolled Ld and got a 10. I flee and roll a 7 on 2 dice - he rolls to pursue and gets an 8. War Altar is gone.
What the feth am I missing? I mean - really, in what fantasy empire world will a war altar dedicated to sigmar with a crazed arch lector on top break becuase a few pussy elves did NOTHING.

What you're missing is that War Altar is Unbreakable, so you shouldn't have taken a break test for losing.

Where does it say that? I have looked all through the codex and found nothing to indicate its unbreakable.

Page 53 in the The Empire army book, under section The Power of Sigmar. The War Altar gives unbreakable, a 4+ ward save and magic resistance 2.

Thats the most important think about the popemobile, so it's a shame to miss it.
Step 1) Select the enemy's most powerful combat unit
Step 2) Stick the wagon in it as soon as possible
Step 3) issue lots of challenges.
Step 4) Whenever the wagon or the archlector takes a wound, use the priest prayer "healing hand" to heal it all the way back up to full health.
Step 5) With 300 or so of your points holding up 500 or so of his, defeat the rest of his army.
Incredibly frustrating for combat-heavy armies like Warriors.

Couple things... First off like others have said, the war altar is unbreakable.
Second off, the war altar slamming into 13 elves should decimate them. Did you remember impact hits ( d6 str 5 auto hits before blows are struck, first round it charges). Those alone should have tagged a few elves. Also don't forget the warhorses attacks.
Third, how did he get 2 combat res for ranks? If he had 13, then the most he could have gotten is 1 ( remember its bonus ranks, the front rank does not count).
If he doesn't break them the first round, then grind them down with soulfire, or flank them with another unit, because the war altar isn't going anywhere.

I had posted elsewhere regarding rules disputes - I'm thinking I'm gong to avoid the high elf player for a while becuase things always seem to go in his favor. your right - he should not have gotten +2 for ranks and I did get a single impact hit and it failed to wound. I had absolutly crap for rolls - I mean REALLY terrible rolls.
in fact in another game I played with the same model the war alter was killed by - wait for it - horses! Ok it was actually the chaos demon monster cavalry guy's horses - but ya Mounts none the less.
Then I played another game last night with the saem model (third in a row) and he was pitted against some beastmen with a hero. The hero managed to hit with 7 attacks, wound with 4 and I made NO saves! Then the reast of the beasts managed to get 5 more wounds and I failed to save 2.
Idk - I'm not feeling it but I know the war altar is critical to the empire army.

If you are charging into a dangerous block of heroes and infantry, then use 6 dice to cast speed of light on the war altar to get speed of light WS 10 to help keep the war altar alive longer (or any other defensive magic you might have).
One good piece of gear for the War Altar is the mace of helstrum. Great for assassinating characters bunkered in units, and killing monsters too. I personally like it better then the speculum.

If you are running speculum DO NOT cast speed of slight on yourself
But yah I run the spculum and helstrom mace

The big problem I find with a speculum is nobody in their right mind is going to accept a challenge from the War Altar slamming into one of their blocks. The only time it really works is against lone heroes, Greater Daemons and WoC. First 2 of those 3 can be delt with by shooting (cannons anyone?). Mace on the other hand, works against almost anything save hordes of cheap fodder troops. It can assasinate characters even without a challenge, and will own monsters, and he will still hold his own in a challenge. I would rather spend the remaining 40 pt allowance on Dawn Armor instead.
