I am weighing up whether to use a Hive Tyrant or a Parasite of Mortrex at 1000 points for my Tyrannid list. I want a HQ that best supports Gargoyles.

(as an aside, I wish Gargoyles were troops!)

Hive Tyrant pros:

- Monsterous creature can pop land raiders
- Can take AOE psychic powers and attacks
- Better support for surrounding models, but these must be purchased
- Cannot be killed with Instant Death

(Wings doesn't allow Hive Tyrant to deep strike as jump infantry??)

(What are the best psychic powers / upgrades to take as a winged tyrant??)

Parasite or Mortrex pros:

- Can hide amongst Gargoyle Squads (not being picked out as a monsterous creature)
- Can deep strike with Gargoyles (as jump infantry) and hence charge with them
- Can spawn ripper swarms to help overwhelm units charged with Gargoyles

My list (1000 points):
Spoiler:

Hive Tyrant 1
Wings
Adrenal Glands

Hive Guard 4

Genestealers 12

Genestealers 12
Scything Talons

Gargoyles 10

Toxin Sacks

Thanks for the insight and replies!

Notes (from most important to least important):

- concerned that I will run into a situation where "oh land raider, you lose" ... because need an MC as a heavy armour popper. A harpy is 160 points and underwhelming FOC... might as well take more gargoyles, or a winged tyrant... Maybe a Zoe in a spore pod?

- was going to add 24 Termagants as back-field objective holders but... I don't like them =/ I wish I had something tougher / longer ranged. Even 3 tyranid warriors with venom cannons / deathspitters do not fill that role. I know Tervigons are ideal but would need 160 points to sink into that... Maybe I should just aim to table at 1000 points instead...

- squeezed the talons onto the genestealers to make up 1000 points exactly. I'd run them naked otherwise.

- will put a Tervigon into the second tranch (the next 1000 points to a 2000 point list).

- Hive Tyrant powers ,two of which are based on the enemy's leadership value... making Paroxym and Leech Essence auto take. Other than taking expensive Brood Lords with the Genestealer squads, there isn't a way to modify leadership... the old "the horror" tyrannid lists are dead...

- Thank god Winged monsterous creatures can deep strike... now to keep it from being fragged by heavy weapons as there's no target saturation... I wish gargoyles had melta guns

Here is an adjusted parasite list... aiming to table

Way more durable and versatile hq. Cause the parasite will just get shot down by a missile. Of course if you don't have a suitable model to proxy the Tervigon... Give it a shot.

I was hoping to avoid buying Tervigons straight up because they are more troublesome to make / convert, rather than buy off the shelf. In Australia, it works out to roughly $600 AUD per 1000pts

Here is a list organised in purchase tranches (the tranches could be reversed)...

... are Tervigons really that mandatory? The Internet would have me think so, from a competitive standpoint....
