Fabulously blended orange on your Corsair, and the Avatar looks stunning in its magma bound glory, although... just an idea, but have your thought about introducing some color variation to those metal parts? Unless my eyes play tricks on me, I'd say the parts closer to the cracks in the armor should be brighter, maybe reddish. Just a suggestion though.

I hadn't thought about making the metal hotter nearer the edges - good idea. I think in my head the armour was invulnerable to the heat, or something like that!

Well, it wouldn't be too strange for the armor to be able to contain the heat, but then again, there are enough cracks to let it seep out and affect the surroundings. Like I said, it would look pretty interesting, should the metal heat up as well, perhaps a gemstone cracked from heat might not look out of place.

I am loving those gems! You're doing great! Don't give up now!

The wings are also a great look, and I'm glad you gave them a sufficiently nerdy name. They wouldn't be as cool without it.

EDIT:

The right foot in your last picture looks a bit off to me, I'm trying to figure it out, but unsure. I think maybe the white along the ridges is a bit strange? Not sure... but maybe you were going to touch all that up anyway (in which case, ignore this) when you started working on the base.

retouches are definitely going to be needed lol I'm saving that to do as the last job once everything else is done.

Can't quite see what you mean about the foot, other than to me, the white looks too grubby and needs retouching, although it might just be the angle... the base is going to be dark stone and have it glowing where he's stepping

Sounds awesome to me! I wasn't sure if I should mention anything, but then it always helps to have other eyes with things like this. I'm super impressed with the progress thus far!

oh it definitely helps to have other eyes! I was once working on a design and had a spelling mistake staring me in the face for several weeks and I didn't notice it until someone else pointed it out! lol
thank you

not too much work done today - most of the gems done, but I have yet to put the final white dot on. Slightly rubbish shot, so apologies!
I also restarted the spearhead, it just wasn't doing what I wanted it to do, so I took out the dark blue and went for a lighter, cleaner look, and it's working much better, although I had to stop as it was too hot and the paint wasn't flowing very nicely!

Back to work tomorrow (boo!) so progress will slow down, but I'm really quite pleased with progress on him so far, and thank you for all the comments, which should include the response of the manager of the local gaming store which was: "F***ing hell! Oops, sorry, wow..." not quite the response I was looking for, but I think it was positive ; )

Fabulous lava effect on the torso, especially on the back, where it is not obscured by anything. Love it.

as ever, thank you for the kind words, they mean a lot to me.

Not in the mood to do any painting (two days back at work and I'm already tired. Who'd be a teacher?!), but wanted to do something, so I started to put together another Corsair. I'm trying it without arms this time so I can put some more detail in before I put the arms on last. I took one of the Dark Eldar Reaver helmets and trimmed the back down for this one, my reasoning being that if the Corsairs are a mix of Craftworld Eldar, those nudging towards Dark Eldar (Grey Eldar...?) and perhaps some Dark Ones as well, they'd have a mix of looks. Plus, I love the blank helmets, and it'll help with the Tron look!
I also filed down the wings so that they're a bit softer, rounder and a bit more insect-like.

The avatar is coming along very nicely. As for the corsairs the helmet idea is pure win. I would like to see some dark eldar to eldar jetbike conversions, you would do that quite well i believe. Just a thought.

Have you considered looking at nucleosaur's Grey Knights? His blades are sweet look as if they are really glowing

@dantay - just had a look at nucleosaur's Knights: beautiful! And, I have to say (about the blades), very simple, as most good designs tend to be... I almost wish that the Avatar didn't have runes on the blade, as that is making it more fussy, but there you go. It looks like nucleosaur has just used turquoise, white and then another colour for a little bit of a deeper tone... wonder what he used...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
... and just read how he did them... or, that he used an airbrush, which does expain the smoothness a little. Never used an airbrush (for anything), can't think why, I always thought that they'd be better for larger areas...

I have the GW spray gun, which is only useful for spraying large areas/ large quantities of models. It has no control whatsoever..... but its good when you have a horde to paint.

You could get it as smooth with wet blending I would have thought. Nucleosaurs whire is insane... truly like it glows.

he said that he was using some oil paints for some stuff too - that'd help with the brightness (but they take an AGE to dry).
I was looking at the GW spray gun last week! As I tend to be on the slower side of glacial when painting, and I don't paint huge units I don't think it'd be too much help (until I crumble to the innevitable and buy a Phantom Titan! LOL)

do you have an airbrush? consider something like this

I don't, no, and even with my astonishingly flimsy willpower, I don't think I could justify getting one just for blades - although they do look very good.
To be honest, I think I'm just crumbling under the pressure a bit with it - it's come out so well so far, I don't want to cock it up over something relatively straightforward (and comparatively small and easy) as the spearhead.

I agree, i think it looks fantastic as is. Might be as simple as picking the runes out with some color, were you thinking that?

It was just an idea if you absolutely didn't want the runes there - if they were too much of a hassle... but really, I think the speahhead is already looking quite nice. You could highlight it a bit more, and maybe add some lightening like streaks, but the rest of the model is looking so great, and the spearhead isn't at all as bad as it seems like it's being made out to be. I would say just take a bit of a break or something and paint up the spear shaft or work on the rest of the gems. It's still looking good Finnan!

: )
a nice tight macro shot to highlight all the flaws isn't helping either lol

no, I know it's not a disaster or anything, so it's okay - but I do quite like the idea of taking off the runes (any excuse to get the file out!), it would make it a lot cleaner, AND actually make it easier to do what I'd like - I want to put a spectrum on the blade, like you see in glass/crystal, so I'd have more room if the runes were gone.

I'm taking a break from it and doing another corsair ; )

Haha, yeah. Good riddance to those unneeded runes! There are plenty of them all over his body already. Good choice of distraction too, those corsairs are great!

a little break from the Avatar - as predicted, now I'm back at work, progress has ground to a halt. I'm going to do some work on him today and see what I get done. I'd like to get the spearhead and maybe the shaft done.

In the meantime, here's the second Corsair, with a headswap. Not too sure about him really... I like the helmet, it stands out, and I like the wings... I tried to do some stripes on him, Tron style, but I don't think it works all that well because you can't see them too well, but hey, I know for the next one now!

(the shots have come out really quite dark - the armour is dark grey, not black. Must improve photography skills!)
