So yesterday I played my first real game of WHFB, using my high elves. My opponent was using Vampire Counts and had a Black Coach- somehow this thing became practically invincible!!

Despite this fact I managed to win the game by tying the coach up in combat with my Lion Chariot, but this thing really worried me! I couldn't believe this thing actually existed

Anyway, I was wondering if someone could explain how this thing became so tough, and how I can be better prepared to fight it off next time

I always try to keep this up to date with what projects I'm working on... but they just keep piling up

High S magical attacks are the best solution.
Usually a spell or hero with a good weapon works well, if going the hero route a fast (prefferably flying) mount will be most usefull.

Between the ward save and the MR, spells are one of the worst ways to try and take it out.
The easiest way actually seems to be just tie it up until a hero with a magic weapon has time to smack it.

Or, just wait a few weeks for the new rules.

Well, basically, it eats magic dice. Both yours and your opponents. I forgot the exact rules, but for each power dice you and the VC player has, the VC player rolls a die. On a 6 (I think), the coach eats the die and it is lost. If it eats enough, it gains a new power.

Note that it can only eat power dice, so dispel dice are untouchable. Also note that not even the VC player's dice are safe.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the eating rolls are made at the beginning of the magic phase. So you can't try to cast them before the coach can eat them :/.

Focus on the Vampire. The coach is really annoying, but you can just ignore it and go for killing the Vampire and watching his army crumble.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

And even after it has gained all it's abilities, it still eats power dice.

Okay thanks guys!!

And yeah, he had his vampire running around on its own, but I didn't realise how important killing it was until turn 4...

Can you really only kill the thing with magic weapons? When he told me about it I was completely stuck, because I had nothing to take it out!!

For the Vampire- only if it takes the Ethereal upgrade, and you can use magic as well.
For the Coach- only once it gains Ethereal, and again, magic can be used.

But doesn't the 4+ ward save and Magic Resistance (3) that the coach gains make it invulnerable to magic?

Note that there are some new VC rules coming out so nothing is really set in stone.

The black coach also crumbles if you defeat it in combat. This can happen, particularly if you fight it with a ranked-up unit and then buff the unit to make it hard for the coach to wound (lore of beasts, lore of shadow, something like that). It is hard as nails, but you can't take ward saves (or any other kind) against crumble wounds. I have found this effective in dealing with it.
