Anyone know how to do a convincing blood effect? My brother is doing Dark Eldar. Enough said.

Depends on the amount. For a little it can be as easy as getting some red ink on a stiff brush then running a card over it to flick the ink. Won't work with the GW washes though, or at least shouldn't.

Orks have been variously depicted with green, purple, black and even blue blood in the past. Nowadays, they are usually depicted as having red blood (which is kinda illogical, but who cares). Dark red might look pretty good IMO.

I have used Red Gore and Gloss Varnish mixed together in Uhu all purpose glue. This will allow you to make drippy runny bits that dry looking goopy, like actual blood spatter from combat would. If you cannot find Uhu All Purpose E600 works good. Automatically Appended Next Post: Forgot to mention, you can even run that concoction over some fishing wire to get long strands of it dripping from things. Its great stuff.

Yup, Uhu glue and red ink will make some nice gory blood effects. No matter what you do, make sure you don't over do it. Less is more for blood effects, don't drown your model in it. Some splatters is enough. Also, as mentioned above, don't use pure blood red, mix in a bit of darker ink to create a more realistic look.

I read the answers and agree w/ most, but I'm going to post because it bears repeating because it's really true- flick a damp brush for your blood effect (I've used old toothbrushes for this. Just point it at the model and pull your thumb back across it- instant spatter effect) and less is more. I've seen entire armies (usually painted my novices / newcomers) that looked like a gallon of red latex spilled on them and were quite horrible. Blood effects can ruin even a good paint job if done wrong. Practice by spattering onto a piece of paper, a pencil, etc before you try it on your models, get the technique down first and you'll know it'll be a "first time AWESOME" go on your models.

Hi !
As said before, using blood red for blood will look like anything but blood. To get a credible blood effet, it needs :
- to be shiny
- to be red on thin layers and get darker in areas where it is thicker
I personnally use inks (the old ones that are no more sold by GW, but other ranges keep selling ink) for this. Here's an exemple on my painboy (it's a WIP picture) using a mix of black, chestnut and red inks :

Unless it is dried gore where is should be slightly darker again and not shiny.

Yeah but fresh blood is so much more exciting.
When blood dries it starts to look more brown. If you're going for dried blood add a little brown to your mix and keep it more matte.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |
