Veterans of decades of bloody warfare, the drill sergeants are living imbodyments of the esprit de corps of the Imperial Guard.

One sergeant in any infantry or veteran squad may be upgraded to Drill Sergeant for +30 points. Drill Sergeants have the folling profile:
WS:5
BS:4
S:3
T:3
A:3
I:4
W:1
Ld:10

Wargear:Bolt Pistol and Close Combat Weapon, Frag and Krak Grenades, flak armour

May be upgraded with:
Power Weapon +10 points
Power Fist +15 points

Special Rules
  • Any Squad he is in is stubborn

  • Any order that is given to his unit automatically passes, there is no need for a roll

  • Drill Sergeants will never be executed by Commissars for failing a morale check. If a unit with a Drill Sergeant and a Commissar fails a morale check, they will fall back as normal

LD10 is too much, even Staken only has LD9. Reduce LD to 9, WS to 4, points to 25 and you probably have something fieldable.

1.) What are you paying for: +1 WS (if we go with MSP's suggestion), +1Ld, +1A, +1I, Stubborn, and free orders.

Free orders is 7 points, tops. Vox Caster is already 5 points, and it does essentially the same thing. Stubborn on Vets? I have no problem with this, 4-5 points, tops. Some stat increases that aren't S or T? No special charging rules or CC rules or extra weapons? maybe 5 points.

    WS:4 BS:4 S:3 T:3 W:1 A:3 Ld:9 Sv:5+

    Wargear: Vets stuff
Special rules: Stubborn, orders, vets stuff.

Can take options as a sergeant.

Looks like 15 points from my angle

Just saying, it's for Infantry Squads too, which means it's more or less a Commissar with a 3A Power Fist and free orders. (I realize you have to pay for the fist too, but who wouldn't?)

Wouldn't you want some form.of better armour on him too? At 1 wound with a powerfist he won't even get a look in at most combats, surely

Less worried about that than vets. The only lulzie thing you can do is clump em all with fists in a combined squad and toss a bunch of ICs in there for special rules. When you've got 70 Furious Charge, Stubborn, Fearless guys running at you, and 13 of them are S7 w/ power, well, yeah. But then they footslog and you blast template and it's diamonds.

Let me get this straight: You're LESS worried about Power Blobs getting Power Fists than Veterans?

He's an upgrade character, not an IC. You have to chew through his 30+ friends before you get to even try to kill him.

Ahhhh I see, cheers. Though I guess that wouldn't necessarily be true in CC would it, as he has to be in b2b contact to use his pf, and his opponent will likely get to strike first. Does that not make the pf null and void / pointless use of points?

B2B or within 2" of someone who is. Not harder than any other squad with a hidden PF, Orks do it all the time.

That was the basis of my point evaluation, yes.
WS5 is supposed to be the result of decades of combat experience. I suppose WS inflation is a bit to blame for this.
So basically yeah a commissar who can take a powerfist and give a blob a bit of extra teeth in CC.
    Also added commissar rule.

So you get a stubborn Commisar type thing, instead of a fearless one, basically a better one... just saying...

Sorry, when I see this topic I picture this:

And now I can't take it entirely seriously.

I think that if the Drill Sergeant's in the Commissar's squad, and the Commissar retreats, then the Drill Sergeant should execute him. He should give his unit stubborn by default as well, as they are conditioned to his incessant insults. Although maybe there should be a "Private Pyle" rule similar to the Catachans regarding Commissars - for each Drill Sergeant in the army, on a 1 during deployment, he has met with an unfortunate accident and isn't placed.

Private Pyle would've been shot and hanged in the courtyard as an example in 40K.

I still don't see what's so scary about S6 power fist in a unit that dies to a stiff breeze.

Lord Commissar has WS 5. Don't blame me for stat inflation.

You'd have a point if Power blobs died to a stiff breeze. They don't. Just look at any of the battle reports by Ailaros for proof.
