Overall the models I have to draw from are:
1 Ethereal, 6 Battlesuits, 6 Stealthsuits, 24 Fire Warriors, 8 Pathfinders, 2 Devilfish, 2 Hammerheads and 1 Skyray, so any changes would need to be made within these choices.

Advice and ways to improve it welcome.
Ultimately I want it to be a Take All Comers list, and preferably I'd like to use my Hammerheads and Skyray.

I'll be testing it this coming wednesday, and I've been reading up on Tau but I'm yet to play with them outside of an apoc game (and they didnt really do much in it) so any tactical advice is welcome too. (deployment hints, biggest threats etc)

MEQs and TEQs are gonna piss in your wheaties without some Plasma Rifles. You could probably drop the Skyray to make points for your suits to be Fireknives instead of Deathrains. With all those Targeting Arrays, Twin-linking your missile pods is kind of redundant anyhow, and Markerlights can give you BS5.

I'd remove the MTs from the PFs' d'fish. Its cost to have the BC *and* drones shoot is not worth it.

I'd add at least two PFs in each unit. Two MarkerLs don't accomplish much (that is, the 2 that are going to hit out of the four 4+ PFs). 6 to 8 PFs have more impact.

Also, all Deathrains is limiting. I'd have one XV8 unit of FKs, another of FireStorms and then the Deathrains.

Otherwise, it's okay.

As it stands, thanks to equipment the suits came with from ebay and SMS systems I have 18 Missile Pods, 4 Plasma Rifles and 1 Burst Cannon.
Don't really have the monies to aqquire more bits right now (thankyou christmas period)

Will try 4 fireknives and 2 deathrains for now.
Upping the PFs to 2 squads of 6 and dropping the PF multi trackers.

Bonding Knife on a 2 man suit team is pointless as you can never be below 50% Your either down a guy or dead.

Bonding knife on a 6 man Firewarrior team with no transport is not worth it either. you will get shot off the table in 5 seconds flat and you will never win objective based matches with no fast way to get your frail FW to the objectives. Go 12 man FW with BK on foot. Or go 6 man in a fish and hold it in reserve til end game objective hunting.

All Deathrain will not do much againt MEQ/TEQ. good for popping rhinos, but when the contents pour out your fubar.

The skyray is basially garbage. Try invest in some Broadsides... Twin linked splitting fire with TL is pure nice.

Oops, missed that. Yeah, drop the Team Leader & BKs on pairs of suits. Not needed.

Trios, yes; having the BK allows a surviving single suit to ReGroup should he lose his two buddies.

Is giving anything drones, or the Shas'el a Shield Generator or Flamer worthwhile? Or is there any other particular upgrade for anything that'll be worthwhile (if not I may as well give the FireWarriors their bonding knives back).

As for the skyray -I'd prefer not to drop it, I like the Seekers.
I'm not going to be buying any Broadsides being I already spent money to fill out my Heavy Support slots and don't have the money currently to buy more for this army.
I also don't overly care for the Broadside models tbh.

My initial hope was to run a Fire Warrior Gunline with a good 5+ squads of Pulse Rifles and an ethereal, but due to certain ebay auctions either failing or suceeding where I wasn't intending them to, and various christmas gifts etc, I don't currently have enoguh FW and don't have the money to aquire them for another few months, so it'll be running a vaguely more sensible list for now In that list they'll all be deathrains because the Str7 can take care of light / med vehicles and the 50+ Str5 shots can deal with the whatever I'm facing on foot.

Anyway that aside - any more advice?

Shield Ds are okay for the HQ.
Ovion wrote:or the Shas'el a Shield Generator or Flamer worthwhile?
No. A Shield Gen's Invuln. Save is likely to be used on things like Pfists, MLs or LasCans. All of which are Instant Death fun. Let a drone take the 50% chance of dying.

Give the 'El back his Target Array, too.

I'd give the FWs their BKs.

Shield Gen is overpriced. Take a Shield Drone on the 'El instead.

Rather than the BK for the FW unit... I would simply use those points to add more FW's.... if your running a gunline that is.

Overall I would love to see you ditch all those PF's and get some more things that actually kill. Removing cover or adding BS, too me is moot when you have minimal AT and Minimal Troops to spam shots. 5th being Mech heavy... You will be bum rushed and spammed into h2h with this list. And we all know how well Tau are in h2h. But its your list and you ultimate decision. I do forsee you being tabled often though.

Yeah - I see myself getting my ass handed to me for a few months, due to the list I have to work with, andthat I'm new to the force.
But money restraints means these are the models I have to work with right now.

I'm kind of in the same position as you money-wise. I can't afford Broadsides. Instead, I went for a mech list and it's worked out for me so far (only a few games played since I meched up though).

http://www.advancedtautactica.com/academy/MTT/index.html

Check that site out if you're interested. It's built for 4e, but many of the tactics are still viable.

In the end, the game's about having fun, so pick what you like.
