I've recently restarted 40k and plan to make an IG army. However the problem is that I hate the design of Cadian Shock troops and FW is out of my price range.
I plan on using these bad boys instead (going to use GW bases and paint the helmets of special weapon carriers brightly to distinguish them)

My question is would this put people off playing with me and will I be able to play in GW stores?

I havent been in any GW stores, but i hear you have to have gw product to play there. As for people not playing you, only d bags wouldnt play you just for buying non gw product. And do you really want to play a d bag anyway.

Since you didn't rule out other GW minis, I thought I'd mention the models under the IG section of the WH40k Collector's range on GW's site.
They have Mordians, Tallarns, Valhallans, and Steel Legion.
The squads of 10 are a little over 20 pounds each, compared to Forge World's 35+ pounds per squad of 10, so they're a little more than half the price of ForgeWorld stuff. Since they're GW models, there would be absolutely no issues with playing at a GW store or tourney.
As for your question, I don't know about what's allowed in a GW store. I only played at one once, and that was years ago.
But I wouldn't mind playing against ya with models that you find look better. I myself use some miniatures from Reaper Minis in my Battle Conclave, which I mounted on appropriate GW bases.

I was going more for a poor man's DKoK but I hadn't thought of this. Definitely something I'll consider!

In that case, Steel Legion troops would suit your aesthetic tastes and stop anyone questioning their legality in a GW environment

There's a bunch of guys who use pig-iron heads/troops as IG at my local GW all the time and the employees don't care at all, so I say go ahead.

I've played at a couple gw stores and no one had issues with me playing non gw products. Personally, I think that pig iron look isn't bad at all. Go with what feels right and isn't that harsh on your wallet.

This question comes up pretty often.
Most wargamers like to see nicely done variant and unofficial armies.
Basically you will not be able to use non-GW models in official GW tournaments. GW shops will most likely stop you from playing with them.
Playing in Indie shops, tournaments and with friends, you will get a lot of acceptance as long as you follow a few sensible precautions.
1. Make a cool army.
2. Ensure the weapons, etc. are clearly distinguishable even if you use non-GW weapons. Your opponents need to be able to tell a plasma gun from a sniper rifle.
3. Do a nice paint scheme (see point 1.)

from experience most store managers don't care as long as you buy stuff rom them also like your chimeras and leman russ'
player probably won't care. i saw a space marine dreadnought being used as a necron anihilation barge last week and everyone was fine wth it.

Depends solely on the stores, really. Some don't care as long as *some* of your minis are GW minis, but some are uber obnoxious. Go to your local GW store and check it out. Watch some games a couple different days of the week and you should have your answer. Some stores require *all* GW minis and fully painted. Some require GW minis, but are lax on paint. Some don't mind a mix. Generally you should expect to put *some* GW minis on the table if you are going to play in a GW store. Though nothing keeps you from customizing and turning those GW minis into something else than what they were designed to be.
The figs themselves are cool. They have a lot of character. The first of my 3 Imperial themed IG armies (yes I build armies and eventually sell them off to build new armies!) I built using the plastic troops that came in the old Warzone game boxed set. The jaegers were awesome looking figs. Add in some GW vehicles and you are good. The only real concern I have is one of scale. I was looking at Wargames Factory plastic colonial british troop minis to use as IG troops at one point, but they figures were *true* 28mm figures and not the heroic 28mm figures that GW makes. They all looked like kids dressed up for war next to GW figures. If that doesn't bother you, as long as you are using the right size bases (20mm round for 40k) it shouldn't matter what the figs lool like as long as they don't give you some kind of extra advantage by being too small or something.
In most GW stores you should be able to get away with non- GW minis supplemented by GW products too. For my personal preference, as long as I could identify what I was fighting I don't really care about the mini manufacturer. Have a friend who plays with half GW minis and half printed "paper armies" figures to bulk out his army for bigger battles. They probably wouldn't let him play that way in a GW store, but I don't care in the least. Since he is on a limited budget he can try out new things rather cheaply before investing in them and finding out he doesn't like the unit at all and is now out $50 that he can't afford to have to replace with something else instead.

I doubt anyone who wasn't a collector themselves would even know they WEREN'T GW DKOK, unless the scale is wrong.
They look awesome, I'd love to play against them.
