I shoot a vehicle that moved 12" and get the result " can't move or shoot". I then assault the vehicle. Do I hit automatically or on 6s?

If you mean 'Crew Stunned' then it has no bearing on what you need to hit the vehicle in that turn's assault phase.

If it is immobilized or it was stationary in its previous turn then you will auto hit.

It's based on what it moved in its previous movement phase, so getting a stunned result would not affect it the same turn.

In this situation you would need to immobilize the vehicle to automatically hit it. Even though it is shaken and stunned, it still moved 12 (or more) in the last phase.

but bear in mind that if it survives the assault phase it cannot move in its movement phase (unless it ignores or reduces stunned), and if your squad survives then you get free strikes in THEIR assault phase

^^Above only true if the vehicle is a walker or has a WS (Bikes, Deffkoptas etc), you do not get locked in combat for other vehicles (tanks etc). (I'm pretty sure anyway)

Nope. All vehicles. If it was a walker you would be locked and would just resolve a regular combat.

If the vehicle fails to move away from the unit that assaulted it for whatever reason (stunned, immobilized, grabbin klaw, dangerous terrain), that unit can strike it again during the enemy's assault phase.

Aces, so in this situation the not locked in combat thing is only relevant to your opponents shooting phase? i.e. if it's a walker your unit can't be shot at, if it's a tank they can (even by the tank itself if they can fire and your infront of one of it's guns).

That's right. You are not "engaged" with the unmoving vehicle, so you can still be fired upon. If your unit survives your opponent's shooting, you continue to strike the vehicle in their assault phase.
