Hello everybody!
Just got done with my first game against the new necrons. It went well, except for the insane destructive power of the monolith! In one turn it deepstriked, fired its ordance and flux arc (killing 5 marines). Next turn, it activated the portal, ordance, and flux arc killing 8(!) marines.
What do you suggest killing it with? I ended up using 2 thunder wolves armed with hammers (2 squads) but even then i only barely managed to take the gun off. That vechile is nuts! Iding the traveller with a force weapon did make up for it

He can't fire the Ordnance weapon plus anything else (including the flux arcs and the door).
It's an AV 14 vehicle. Take it out the same way you take out Land Raiders. Or do you not have plans for those either?

Yeah he can only fire the ordinance weapon and nothing else. Or not fire the Ordinance and fire everything else. I would suggest melta weapons for taking it out obviously.

First off, get him to play by the rules, you can't fire both the Flux Arc and the Whip in the same turn because of the Ordnance rules. Secondly 5 Marines in a single turn isn't really that much, its lucky but by no means impossible. 8 is just plain unlucky, although clearly not going to happen if he is only firing one weapon like he is supposed to.

Secondly the Monolith is really not hard to destroy at all now that it has lost its Melta and Lance immunity. If its dropping right in your face you barely even need to move to get inside Melta range (you can often avoid disembarking from Rhinos, which is nice), and a single squad has a very good chance of damaging it and two squad reliably kill it (I'm assuming a decent number of your squads have melta like they are supposed to). Thunderwolves won't do much the turn it drops (needing 6's) but afterwards should be able to kill it given a few turns.

It was a thousand points, so i had 6 meltas in my army. I wasnt aware he cant fire all his weapons, that would have meant killing 3 and 5 marines, which is a more...workable number then 5 and 8. Does the portal work like a gun? I dont have access to the necron codex so any information would be great.

@rigeld2, why the hostile tone? It was my first game in 5th ever and his 2nd with the dex. I dont think most people expect a raider with a squad inside at 1k anyway, or at least it was so in 3rd.
Everyone else, Thanks for the rules help!

With the new necron codex, Living Metal got severely nerfed. Instead of making the monolith a nigh-unkillable monstrosity, now it merely ignores crew shaken and crew stunned results. Those six meltaguns should have been plenty, assuming you could have gotten them into range.

Well with him wiping half a squad a turn by not knowing the rules, i wasnt able to get in range before dying. I believe now i can beat him no problem

Regardless, you should try to build your lists to take on most opposition. With that in mind, you need the usual anti-AV14 sorts of things - Vindicators, Meltas, etc (Thunder Hammers, Dreadnoughts and the like in a pinch).

Are vindis worth taking? Everyone i know/read says they are terrible. Id rather not spend 60 on a model that wont see use :p. I have 4 fists, 1 hammer, 6 meltas, 10 mls at 1k pts. Is this enough

The Vindicator is the 110 point tank with the S10 Large Blast cannon. It's certainly worth taking, but expect it to get blown up within two turns.

Think of it as a bigger Land Raider. Meltas, lascannons, powerfists, etc.

And vindis aren't too bad, but I think it's better to take them in pairs, or not take them at all.

Let the galaxy burn.

If you take a vindicator, take more than one. Relying on a single vehicle and watching it blow up never helps.

Does your opponent have access to the necron codex? They should, therefore you should too. You're very much allowed to check out your opponents codex, if they refuse, it's a little suspect.

I'm surprised he didn't mishap with the giant monstrosity. They don't have guided DS anymore do they?

That's why you field a raider with a squad inside at 1k- because who the hell would field a raider at 1k? Works good if your local isn't a meltafest.

speaking of meltafests... I find it strange and disturbing your GH don't have metlas. Welcome to 5th. Meltas rock the socks. Especially when you can get them with GH!

And the monolith has a 24" range on its whip. Do you have rhino's?

If you did I'm struggling to get why you didn't slag it. If you didn't, a whole lot is suddenly made clear

-edit- also, don't be afraid of using 10 man GH squads without the wolfguard. A free special weapon ain't too much to be sneezed at, and you've still got ATSKNF so you're not going to leg it off the table if you fail a moral check (if your close to the edge though...)

It wasn't meant to be hostile - just pointing out that the Monolith isn't the only AV14 around. If you have issues with this vehicle, you'll have significant issues with quite a few lists/races.

6 meltas, 10MLs, 4 fists and a hammer and you had problems dealing with it? That's 20% of his points at 1k, so a pretty significant investment.

And for those amazed he DS'ed it - no, it doesn't have any deep strike protection, but mishaps only occur if he hits impassable terrain (or other models). Landing in difficult terrain is fine. Soooo many people get that wrong.

Well fists and mls can only glance. I managed to destroy his other 3 vechiles (2 warrior transports and a command barge). His mono and warriors wrecked my melta squads since we were playing his rule wrong. I doubt a raider would give me anu issues since their firepower isnt as good as a mono is...

FTR, A single BS 4 Melta shot in range has a 15.74% chance of popping a Mono, so it takes about 7 shots to reliably open one up. Not really disagreeing with anything said, but some people seem to think Melta is instant kill against AV 14.

Because generally you throw 3-4 meltaguns at it at once

On a somewhat related note, can Monoliths evade ramming maneuvers like all other Skimmers can? It juwt seems unlikely fluff-wise.

Are they skimmers? (yes)
Do they have any restrictions saying they can't evade? (no)

It just doesn't quite seem feasable.

Usual anti AV14 tactics rush something in and melta it. Land speeders, wolf scouts, a squad with melta and combi-melta in a rhino etc.
