I think when you say "sovereigns" you mean "reapers"...

The Reapers in Mass Effect always resembled the 3rd Edition Necrons more than the Tyranids. An ancient diabolical machine intelligence. Not to mention making human-Necron hybrids. That was the old Necrons though. The Newcrons of Matt Ward resemble Legion much more. Misunderstood, courageous, loyal, etc.

I've always liked the idea though that a Mass Effect-style utopic alliance between minor races and perhaps a more advanced/progressive faction of humans could exist and fight the Imperium/Orks/Dark Eldar/Tyranids/what have you.

Well, if it's a free for all, all out brawl... the 40k universe (or even just the Imperium) wins by sheer number and firepower. Mass Effect is a much more 'realistic' universe in the sense that no army can be said to be 'numberless' and so forth. I don't think the Federation has spaceship with firepower that's even close to most Imperial Battleship.... it'd be like bringing a 3,000 pts codex army vs a 50,000 pts apocalypse army...

Reapers may change the equation... but than again, the Reapers are the Big Bad of the ME universe, if they are allowed in the fight, are the Big Bad of the 40k Universe allowed too (i.e. Chaos God, C'tan, etc)?

Now if it's a more localized skirmishes (say, in the 500-1500pts range), it can become a lot more interesting... orks vs krogans? rachni vs tyranids? eldars vs turians? Necron vs geth? Space Marines vs Asari Commando? A lot of potentially very interesting match up there.

But as always, we run into the same issue of all those 'VS' thread... comparative power between technology is very difficult to pin down. Can Mass Effect weaponry go through power armor? carapace? Flak? How does a biotic barrier hold up to a bolter round or a lasgun?

I mean, you have some people who think standard modern day ammunition from a high powered rifle could go through power armor... and some who say the same ammunition would bounce off harmlessly....

They have a Mass Effect version of 40k. It's called Rogue Trader. Or were you guys not trying to fly around the galaxy and bang every female there was to be had? I must be playing a different game.

Reapers are considered to be at least 9km which is less than a Battleship of the Imperium of man.
But their infantry units do have minitature rail guns, and rail guns on just about every single ship. Give or take its an entire universe of tauist technology vs the 40k universe. Sadly being a Mass Effect fan that I am 40k wins.
I love mass effect more than 40k. (mainly because the story is moving along and I love the characters, and I don't bang all the girls. I usually ignore them XD)

No, it doesn't. Despite the popular belief, biotics have nothing to do with psychics. It's just a cheap imitation for individuals that were exposed to Eezo.

Sigh, it pains me how little people know about 40k these days -_-

Firstly, the Reapers are only around 2km. Also, ME guns are nothing like the mass drivers in 40k. Same goes for the ship-grade weapons.
Also, no race in ME (not even the Reapers) even remotely match the Tau technologically.

Yeah, it would be a slaughter. The torpedoes of Imperial Battleships would be as large as most of the frigates the Citadel races would use. Krogan are tough, but I think a Space Marine would be tougher. The Reapers took centuries to eradicate one race from the galaxy (Protheans), while the Imperium, if truly dedicated, could do it in a couple of decades, tops. Estimates of course.

This. Im sure it is no spoiler by now that the reapers entire goal in ME3 is to destroy the earth because they want to kill the humans they view as the biggest threat in the galaxy. They spend enough time "destroying the earth" that you are able to leave the planet while its already being attacked, and go on a huge quest gathering all the alien species in the galaxy to fight together then fly back to earth. In 40k a single inquisitorial ship would have fired an exterminatus at the planet and move along to the citadel.

When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1
