I've been using the Tamiya sprays, trying to find close matches to the GW paints I'm using in case I need to touch it up, but these leaves a bit of an odd look for some sections. What do others use?

I use spray paint. If I can't get that colour or shade I paint it that colour.

i use the GW "Large Drybrush" and very quickly cover the vehicle, painting as fast as possible to ensure a smoother coat. This combined with working in layers leaves most of my vehicles looking pretty good.

My advice is either get an airbrush if you think you are a good enough standard and can be bothered to keep one. Also they cost quite a bit.

Or my way is that i use a GW large drybrush with watered down paint.

Although if you use Tamiya spray you can find a mass of paint range comparers on the net.

I use brushes, but I'd say go with an airbrush much, much easier to get a smooth coat.

Sorry if this isn't helpful, but for vehicles there is no substitute for an airbrush. If you are JUST basecoating even a crappy one will work, though with airbrushes you really do get what you pay for, and I doubt you will only want to use it for basecoating.

If that really isn't a possibility water down the paints and apply them with a large 'tank brush' in many layers.

You could always decant some of the paint in the can if you need to touch things up a bit.

Krylon Sandable Grey Primer in the spray can, fills in small defects but won't clog the detail molded in the plastic or resin. I personally use Humbrol paints when I can get them or lacking those Floquil railroad colors. Thinned out they have a finer "grain" than the FW paints and you have a wider color choice.

If painting for an army I use whatever color spray I used for my army. For my IG that meant that the figs and the vehicles were sprayed with Krylon Ruddy Brown (reddish brown) primer. Then I go in with a matching brush paint and touch up whatever I missed.

If I didn't spray the army, then I'll prime black and drybrush color over it.

If you have a lot of tanks to do an airbrush is worth every penny.

Army painter sprays would probably be a good choice if your only doing a few tanks tho.
