So today i decided to bit the bullet and buy a cheap case with foam trays. The one i found was 40$ give or take and had 4 trays in thim that could hold up to 40 standard 40k space marine models each. Know the case itself is cardboard(thick, but still cardboard). Not intended tor heavy traveling but don't do that much. My family insists i got ripped off. but compared t other trays i feel good. Its quality and they trays will never outlast their usefulness. So did i get a good deal?
The case is by K.R. Multicase.

It's not a bad deal. The more expensive foam cases can really get out of control in price. Especially Battlefoam, their cases are monstrously expensive.

A used GW case goes for about that much. Funny enough, i have one for sale as well as other manufacturer cases too. (I went with Battlefoam)

You have not been ripped off mate you have bought a good product.
The card cases are robust enough to use in general travel uses, but if you are like most of us it only has to go in the car so is doesn't matter even if it wasn't!
The abilty to own multiple cases for easy storage which you can then use to take out the house or swap into another metal case for example is a real boon. Its more of a storage and trasport system once you get going. MAssive space saver and great utility.
I have 5 of these plus thier metal case and a backpack and its all good quality product. I generally have picked these up in sales so it was cheper altogether than a standard BF bag.

You were not ripped off. When it comes to transportation of models you should evaluate usability vs cost vs your own comfort.
The best case I ever had was a $20 from Dicks Sport Goods, it was a paint ball gun case. I went out to a craft store, and got 3 inch deep soft foam and custom cut to fit all my guard tanks. With a little elbow grease, I fit 8 Chimera, and 4 Leman Russ tanks which I had magnetized the sponsons and turrents. I still had room for a tray that fit all my guardsman. The weapon teams when in a ammo hopper case. I loved it, then I sold my guard.
KR are not bad, you just have to be mindful, and have realistic expectations. As an example, I wouldn't use one if I lived in an area with a lot of brutal weather. Getting it wet obviously might not be the best idea. However, if you are really only running into / out of store to your car, you could put a trash bag around it and keep rain off it.

It sounds a good deal to me.
If you need to travel with your cardboard box you can probably find a case to fit it into. KR do sort of nylon wrappers for their cardboard carriers.
You can get all kinds of boxes and cases and buy all kinds of foam online pretty cheaply so actually you can make anything you like, but it can be a hassle doing all that work.
Battle Foam saves a lot of time and that is what you are paying for.

KR Multicase is awesome. Those card boxes are actually surprisingly durable, and covered in a light coating of wax that will resist water.

See I bought the exact same one as you and it's really good, what I did though is get the PS2 fat console carry case and rip out the insides - you have enough space to put the 4 foam layers and 3 tanks down the side and because there wedged and there's a thin foam layer each side there not damaged. also it's metal so better than cardboard.

In that case your LGS might have done you as the standard multicases are listed as $38.99 with free delivery.
But you have local taxes and such so it's hard to say for certain. Still it's about the right price so YMMV.
