Yesterday I went into the last gaming store to pick up some paints, something I dread as where we once had 3 stores that all carried full lines of products we have this one that is hit or miss and most times it's miss. Anyways, I was talking to the clerk and he asked if I played any games. I told him that I had retired from 40K a few years back when the shop my friends owned closed. As we were talking he asked if I was interested in starting again. At the time I said no, but I'm thinking it would be nice to do some gaming on the weekends.

My big question I guess is should I go ahead and return to gaming or wait until after the rumored rules change again? I know that I'm going to need buy new armor and units to replace the models that have deteriorated over the past 5 years. Is it worth the money in terms of new rule books and such or should I stay retired?

Anyway, I'm on the fence so any input would be nice so thanks for any advice.

Don't hang back on getting models, I doubt anything will be obselete after the new edition.
See if you have a friend who wants to go halvsies with you on the "Assault on Black Reach" box set, that contains a moderate army for both Space Marines and Orcs.

Well, you went and bought some paints, right? You must still be doing some modelling of some sort.

Nothing TOO drastic has changed in the last 5 years on the model-side. What army(ies) do/did you play then? If it was Grey Knights or Necrons, and you want to pick those back up, thats one thing. The line has been re-done or updated quite a bit. If it was Space Marines, then a Space Marine is a Space Marine is a Space Marine. Not much needed there. Eldar? You're in luck..nothing new has really come out lately.

Whether you need an update or not, there's always cheap ways back into the hobby. The Swap Shop here or Bartertown always has people selling off stuff at VERY reasonable prices. I like to think of it as continuing my hobby off someone else's broken dreams Ebay is always an option as well. There's never a reason to pay full retail.

As far as the upcoming edition change goes, no big deal. You could wait the 6-7 months or so until then, or you can get some gaming in before that. Perhaps take the time to start updating/painting the models you currently own, then when 6th edition comes out, take a look at the rules, play some games with what you have, maybe proxy some stuff in friendly games, and decide if you like it or not. Very little money spent then until you are SURE you're enjoying it again.

I play

I will magnetize (now doing LED as well) your models for you, send me a DM!

Buying your armies newest codex and a single rulebook can't hurt if your looking for something to do. You have the models, THAT'S the tough part. Now all you need is a good place to play again.

You won't need to replace old models, they are still and will always be legal. Play with what you got, and see if you can get back into the game after a few matches.

I play IG, and I still have a good size army, it's just all my armor is trashed.

As for buying paints, yeah I still do models and such, so I'm not out of practice on my skills. That said I just hate having to start over in this hobby, however I may just get a small IG army put together in the next couple of months.

Funny thing, some of the scenery that this store has for games has "STOLEN FROM **** HOBBY" with my name on the underside of the tiles. Maybe I could game with my old stuff.
