GW has replaced all the current Warrior Boxsets for Lord of the Rings with smaller, cheaper Boxsets ranging from around 10-12 figures and they are all marked as "Advance Order".

Examples:

They've cut down to around Half the number off the models and lowered the price by around 30%, meaning it's harder and more expensive to play LOTR.

I heard it was about 30% off the normal boxes

For like 50% less models.

Now that the original boxes are gone...good luck

Ebay still there though at least. And maybe some online retailers/LGS may have a few. Heck I bet some GW themselves have a back stock

Anyways someone else calculated it, its about a rise from £0.86 to £1.13 per fig

Yeah, I'll imagine there is still quite allot of the first boxes at most GW's amd probably any online store selling this stuff. I'm bloody annoyed with the Easterling Boxset, I mean getting only four pikes was a pain but now only 2?

This would bother me..... If anyone actually played LOTR :(
I really want to play, but no one I know has any interest in it..... Played a few small games over 3 years ago now, but thats it. Oh and one game with my younger brother more recently, using the Mines of Moria box set, but I let him use the Balrog as well.....

Right, starting immediately, they won't sell most of the two sprue warrior boxes, but repackage them as one sprue boxes: 50% content for 66% price. Must be their idea of preparing for the Hobbit movie release

Agreed, Imagine they'll make the new rule set focus on lager games, and god help those wanting to start War of the Ring.....

So a 30% increase in price? That's a shame.

Obviously a move to be more marketable to parents buying their kids gifts, though.

I think you hit the nail of the head. Parents will see a cheaper price. They will not know about there was twice as many minis before. Most times, it will come to, "hey it's cheaper price" so the parents are getting more bang for the buck. Only if theyknow how much more they are actually paying per mini.

The cynic in me says that they know the LOTR bubble won't last as long this time, so they're going to reap what they can over the shortest space of time.

It fits the GW MO - short-term game with no view to long-term.

I believe this is because a user on this forum pointed out in another thread that LoTR was actually a lot cheaper than the other core games.

Obviously GW picked up on this and will address the issue

It's a shame they didn't sort out the pike issue with the plastic Easterlings.

Silly silly GW.

At least I already have several boxes worth of plastics to get through.

The only real positive is smaller box sets mean I'm more likely to finish painting all their contents!

Halve the contents but not the price. A price increase by any other name and it's not even May. How typically GW.

Looking around the LOTR is disappointing. I have characters from the films, and the Fellowship and similar are lovely. But look at this crap.

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1350025

Five figure for £30, but in that picture there are only two variants. Can that be right? Rubbish. Two variants in a box of five figures?

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1360002

£17 for a very flat rather non-dynamic figure. Was this made in the early 90s? The horse isn't great either, with the tail sculpted all over the legs. This is odd too because most cavalry are cast with their legs free, again this is like something sculpted to cope with 90s casting limitations.

Their character packs with a foot and mounted version are £20.50, I remember them being originally released individually and then packaged together for £12. The Fellowship of the Ring box is a whopping £37 and the box of 9 Ringwaiths is a colossal £50.

WTF??!

That first link is OOP I think, plastics of those are available. And these prices aren't exclusive to LOTR, just poor GW pricing all round, why do we all still play GW games?

hrm. I still needed several boxes of plastics to round out my LotR movie-campaign-forces so I can play through the scenarios with my wife and friends. Plan was to get the basics for the different forces plus a bit of colour, but not forces of WOTR size or anything, - then never need to buy anything for LOTR again.

Of course, the embargo screwed much of that over.. and now this is going to screw me again.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Clearly, this is preparation for The Hobbit line - where the 10-infantry boxes of plastics will be the standard.

Not sure what part of that was funny...

Perhaps I should clarify: we play a lot of WotR around my shop, and I want to start dwarves. If I buy up all the old dwarf sets before they see a 33% price increase, I save quite a bit of money.

Ahh, I'm very sorry. I suspected as much which is why I was trying not to laugh.

Its just that a lot of people (probably not seriously invested in the LotR game) poke fun at LotR selling terribly/being not very popular. I remember a cruel joke about how when a GW store was robbed, the looters didnt even touch a single LotR set.

I always find these comments interesting and wonder what constitutes "good value" to different people.
Personally I can look at the Eldar army I bought over 5 years ago that cost me around £200 new. It gave me 6 months of building/painting and then another 4 and a half years of playing games. So that's £40 a year and I've probably played around 20-30 games a year with them.
Pretty damn good value actually.

Makes sense to change things now so that there is an established sales model when the Hobbit comes out. It won't be until the second film that people will want to fight the battle of the five armies. Until then I'd expect small packs of heroes vs gobilns, wargs and spiders. Collectors of Tolkien memorabilia will pay through the nose for named character figures.

Yeah, 'tis true Kenshin. It's a shame how little people seem to like it; both WotR and LotR are pretty fun (my preference being WotR). In fact, I think WotR is a better system than either Fantasy or 40k.

I agree, tto bad never played since nobody does around here. Now please go on Whineseer or BoLS and say that. All they do is trash LotR system. Funn if it wasn't for LotR, 40K and Fantasy might not be here right now since it was LotR that was the bread and butter for GW in the early 2000s.

Muthuh fu... Well, I wish I was surprised by this.

THIS is the reason why I collect multiple armies for games that I like. Because with prices like these, finding opponents willing to invest in a game that is already not very popular to begin with is not going to be easy and in fact it was already not very cheap to begin with.

Best to just do multiple armies when they were cheaper and just leave GW to their future predictable stupidity.

Because even if I do lure people into playing LotR/WotR using my models, I will be damn sure to spurn the GW name while doing so. I wont be responsible for someone buying 10 or 12 severely dated models for a quarter Benjamin. Especially for the numbers needed for WotR...

I guess I will just have to be satisfied with 4 decent sized WotR armies instead of planning on doing anything else.

Game Workshop. You might have bought a bunch of our stuff if it was just $10 cheaper, but we fixed that for you by instead raising prices so you wont buy anything at all. We're GW and we're here to help!
