IG Chimeras and Vendettas all come with searchlights as a default wargear. However, is it okay if I don't model any searchlights on the vehicles? I will be using the army in tournaments too.

While I can't comment on the Valkyrie kit as I've never owned/made one, I know the chimera (as do other Imperial vehicles) comes with a searchlight. If you want to be truly 100% wysiwyg, you should model it. That being said, I've NEVER seen anyone in any type of game argue about that if its part of the starting loadout of the vehicle. I have seen the question raised for Blood Angels which IIRC don't have the auto-searchlights but must instead upgrade to them.

The only time you might run into trouble is with Hellhound style vehicles, which don't come with searchlights standard (and no Smoke Launchers, either).

If its optional then yes it needs to be modeled, if its standard its assumed.

Ok, as for valk/vend models there are all kinds of sensors, lights & domes on the bird, any of which could be counted as a searchlight. On the chimera, theres a sensor of some kind on the multilaser which I'd have no problem w/ you calling the searchlight.

Awesome thanks guys, I really don't like to model searchlights on my Chimeras!

Techincally, it wouldn't exist.
It has to be on the model to be used, just like at least the sergeant or one model in a tactical marine squad must have those spindly things they call grenades on his belt to count as having F&K grenades.
That said, if it's basic wargear and there is no deviation between models [therefore no opportuinity for confusion] it shouldn't be a problem
As has been said before, if you're using a model where you have to purchase the searchlight, either model it or don't use it.
Of course, a good opponent will not care that much, because searchlights are truly worth so little [heck, even when you say "I'm so glad I have it" it is really worth crud all. ]

If it's standard on the vehicle but it isn't modelled on the outside of the vehicle just tell your opponent that the vehicle has a hand held spot light (like a lot of police cars have) and that currently the light is inside the vehicle. This is the same sort of argument as "my frag grenades are in my model's pocket".

Really. Based on what?
The rulebook says that "upgrades" must be modelled. It does not require standard wargear to be modelled.
This is also the standard that the overwhelming majority of tournaments set.

They have a specific exclusion for grenades in the rulebook regarding WYSIWYG so bad choice of example.

A friend of mine had this come up once. His response was legendary. I paraphrase slightly, but if it happens to me, it's the reply I'm going with.
The searchlights on my vehicles were all destroyed by a Chaos Storm of Irritation during the fateful campaign on Nitpick VII. Since then the techmarines have upgraded all the vehicle headlights from on/off swtiches to off/low/med/high settings. The 'high' setting functions as a searchlight.
