Hello everyone. So this is what i happen to own for Salamanders. I have never played a game, and am only beginning to read and understand the rule book. Other than reading novels etc....you can consider me the n00b of all Warhammer n00bs.

If anybody can look over this list and tell me if it is ok. What should be changed or removed all together. Also since I dont even know the exact points on this. If I should trim it so it is a lower game point level to learn.

Finally with what I have what would be the ideal. (expecially what should I use my transport/tank/drop pods for...which squads etc...)

10 man tactical squad
Chaplain with Thunder Hammer and Crozius (can the Chaplain take the place of a sergeant or do I need one?)
7 x bolters
1 x combi flamer
1x rocket launcher

10 man tactical squad
7xbolter
1x seargent bpistol/powerfist
1x multi-melta
1x flamer

10 man squad(dont know what this squad would be called...)
1x sergeant with power fist and bolt pistol
9xbolt pistol and chainswords

10 man sternguard veterans
veteran sergeant with combi-melta
4 vets with combi-melta(I heard I can do that for an extra 20 points only? or am I dreaming?)
5 vets with special ammo dragonfire(that works right?)-any other ammo that is better??

6 man terminator squad
2 x lightning claw
4x TH/SS

10 salamander scout squad
1 scout sergeant with combimelta
8 snipers
1 rocket scout

1 dread with melta and h flamer
1 dread with hammer (and whatever just the hand part is called)
1 dread with lascannon (and whatever just the hand part is called)

I also have 3 drop pods I have not assigned (cause I dont know what to assign them to)

2 rhinos
2 Vindicator tanks
1 Land Raider Redeemer
1 Land Speeder Storm - multi melta & heavy flamer

Remember ZERO idea what I am doing. But really want to get into playing the game not just reading the lore.

Thanks in advance!

Buy the codex and then write your list in a nice neat way, please

Play with whatever models you can make into a reasonable list.
1500 pts vanilla marines start to make sense, so start worrying about a good list in that points range.
above 1500 pts is where Vulkan starts to kick in.

Vulkan means just spamming melta and flamers. Then add some hammer terminators in some land raider. Be careful to add some long range weapons into list.
Then you'll be fine.

Just to clarify these are the models you currently own?

Yes basically these models were given to me, which is why I dont really know how to make a clear list. I guess I should get the rulebook.
sorry I knew I wouldnt know how to write the list.
From what I own is there a under 1500 point or 1500 point list you would make out of it?

It looks like you have a reasonable base for a Salamanders list. Having a Land Raider and some Assault Terminators with Thunder Hammers would really help but it's not 100% necessary. You could probably make a workable 1,500 point list for starters. The Chaplain is a separate entry in the codex and cannot be taken as part of a Tactical Squad. He can join a squad, but often times there is not enough room in their transport for him. He's best attached to a melee unit like Terminators.

I would look at buying the Codex and the Rulebook before anything else, then buy Vulkan, 5 Assault Terminators and a Land Raider of some sort (any kind will do). From there you can easily develop a 1,500-2,000 point list with the models you have listed here.

The main thing is to get the rules down. Go to your local game store and get a few games in against players that know the rules extremely well. Most of them will be more than willing to give you a demo and coach you through how the game is played. I find that veteran players are usually very accepting of new players (most are around here), and if not, there is usually someone on staff at a game store that can help a new player.

OK models you'll love to have:
Telion: he makes sniper scouts awesome. Him and Vulkan do not really mix you have better or more important units to buy.
Librarian: Vulkan is a little pricey and pushes you in one direction, however awesome that direction is.
Another rhino: land raiders can hide behind three rhinos, out of three enough will get through to do the damage.
Landspeeders: Vulkan armies tend to take speeders with Multimelta and heavy flamers.

Anyway, play
HQ
100 Librarian(give him null zone and force dome?)
Elite
205 Sternguard 4 combimeltas, plus 2 plain in a rhino(actually I would play 2 meltas, 4 plain or I like the flexibility in 2 heavy flamers and 4 combimeltas)
Troops
220 tactical squad melta(you only have a flamer :( ), ML, combimelta (you could use a sternguard model as the serg. in this unit, though obviously this means one less combimelta for your sternguard) in a rhino.

85 Scouts 4 snipers and combimelta serg.

Heavy
145 vindi

145 vindi

That some how is a 900pt army I would not mind playing. Seriously I am surprised usually I find low point scores hard. I guess this list would be blown up at range :(, to expand to 1500 pts I could make sure to have long ranged weapons to cover this, or at least some drop poddy things to take out the long range threat

Note if you play with Vulkan all your meltas, hammers and flamers reroll to hit however they do not get combat tactics.
Combat tactics, which all the infantry in this list have, is the skill to choose to fail a morale test. This means you get charged, you die, then choose to run away, hopefully automatically recover[-this is the marine skill atgfydhgf is something like acronym, it is a bunch of words,] then your entire army shoots the offending unit. With Vulkan you will struggle to run away from combat, so you can not shoot the offending unit, this usually means you should have a powerfist in each tactical squad just in case you get charged.
Or on turn 7 you maybe shot loose a model, choose to fail morale and fall back onto an objective

Here's a link to a Salamander list I posted on my blog recently. It should be pretty cheap to do as well if you source the Dreadnoughts and Marines from 40k forums and ebay etc.

9 drop pods? Not really cheap.
Also a drop pod army is either easy if you opponent lays his troops neatly for you or can be quite hard to play if not.

Also you should have some long ranged weapons and maybe some mobility as well. It can be quite easy to be outmanoeuvred using drop pods. I am not really trying to judge your list

Ebay?

You don't want ranged weapons as they will be deployed first or in reserve. And yes, drop pod lists lack miobility, though that's why there is Scouts, to get objectives. You don't need mobility when you're in the opponents face.
