I've been painting warhammer 40k for a while now, scratch built scenery, models ect. This will be my first time paining Space Marines however, I was hoping for some general aid. Namely, do people find painting the bits individually to be more effective than fully assembled figures due to spots being covered up and hard to get to with fine detail brushes ect. Also, as mentioned in the subject, this is going to be a Salamanders chapter as I rather like the background of the chapter. Do any experienced Salamanders players have tips for application of colors, order to apply them, anything and everything will be appreciated, and i'll post pictures when i get some done to see if they are up to snuff. I know everyone likes to critique. Anyway, let me know what you all think. Thanks in advance.

The best rule to remember is that you assemble the marine as much as possible before painting, so long as you dont have anything crossing his chest. So, sergeants, assault marines, things like that, fuly assemble first. Things like tac marines and sternguard, build them fully except for the weapons.

I play aurora chapter, which has a very similar color scheme. I recorded the steps it takes to paint an assault marine (mostly for myself, since I tend to forget lol).

Here's a link to my how-to, with colors used included: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/418772.page

So I suck at posting, I've uploaded the pictures to my gallery as I cannot seem to get them to load directly into a message, please take a look and let me know what you think.

Not bad, but 2 things.

1) the green is too dark. Its great as a basecoat, but you need to highlight it with snot green/goblin green.

2) the bolter scope is bent! Bend it back. If its resin, you can bend it by soaking it in hot water.

I dunno, but if it were me I would like a really dark Salamander army. Just not a fan of medium to bright green: dark green looks more sinister.

Although I would highlight it with Snot Green, especially on the edges.

Also, one thing to keep in mind: always thin your paints. Even the basecoat: just put a bit of water to make it flat.

Salamanders have a darker scheme. Personally I am moving toward painting while they are still on sprue. I can get the details much better and I think overall they are faster to paint. I also only field painted armies so its better for me to paint then assemble than the other way around.

This.

I think that the green looks good. Just remember to thin your paints.

Forest Green Krylon fusion plastic spray paint is a very nice mediumish green color.

Ok, update,
I basecoated some units in white this morning before work, and spent some time painting them up tonite, I got sidetracked on my terminator, as you will see, not much work got done on the Sgt.
I've tried some new stuff, let me know what you all think. The green seems to be not so dark as it was on the last guy i tried, probably because of the black basecoat.

I've also considered building up the color with wash's, though this seems like it would take a lot, as I like the darker colors, and three washes only got me to here...

This was the first wash

Anyway and always, thanks for the advice/critique/suggestions.

Try this:

Base coat with Dark Angels Green and gold bits with brown (any brown besides Graveyard Earth). Then paint the meshy parts black and paint the armor with Snot Green. Paint over the brown with Shining Gold and add details.

That's what I do.

PM me if you want me to draw anything related to Warhmmer 40k. I will put it in my gallery for all to see.

try to work on more even coats. Your greens are coming across as blotchy in some places.

Try washing the first one's skin with Devlan Mud, to add a little bit of depth. other than that, they're looking good.
