Hey! I got the BT conversion kit because it looked cool, and I wanna paint some of the marines I've made. Unfortunately, I have NO idea how to make Marines look good in black. Anyone got any quick/easy to do tutorials for making decent looking Black Templars?

if you want to try something alittle different, paint them codex grey and then apply 2 coats of badab black wash to the grey areas, maybe even 3 depending on how it looks. I've found it to be an easy and good looking alternative to painting black templar.

Black as usual, then a dark grey highlight on the extreme armour edges works

Example of the technique I described. Actually didn't paint the codex grey on this was just 3 coats of badab black right over grey primer. Almost no extreme highlighting done.

That looks great! Just some questions. I know it's a wash, but do you like, thin the wash? Do you let each layer dry? Have any tips for painting tabards and robes?

For black I like to basecoat in Charadon Granite before washing with Badab Black. Charadon Granite is a brownish/charcoal colour that works very well with the Black wash. It's also a Foundation paint so it covers well.

Washes don't need to be thinned since they're already quite thin to begin with. Let the wash dry before applying a second coat. Washes seem to take longer (roughly 10 minutes) to dry than paint so don't rush it.

As for tabards and robes, there are a couple of easy ways of painting them:

1. Basecoat with the colour you want, then apply a coat of wash. The wash will settle into the crevices and darken them.

2. Do the same as #1, except instead of washing apply a lighter shade of the base colour to the high areas on the robe. This will produce the effect of light illuminating and highlighting these areas.

Thanks. I do not thin the wash, just apply it evenly over all of the surface.the first layer goes on pretty light. I let each layer dry fully. You really start to see the effect after the second wash. It becomes a really deep dark grey. Yu might be happy after that but you can go to a third layer to get the effect I got which is almost black. For some Edge highlights like on the shoulders i used the grey primer again. In this case model air primer. For the tabard I used Vallejo heavy khaki for the base color( kommando khaki works too) washed it once with with devlan mud, let it dry fully. Washed it again with devlan mud but this time while the wash was still wet I came in with heavy khaki again for the highlights, using the wash to wet blend it in. Finished it off by rubbing some weathering powder on the bottom to give it a dirty look.
