This is hilarious, some of this I have encountered. One of the videos hit home at a very personal level, but it worked out in the long run.
One of my friends is majoring in philosophy, not sure how well that will wok out. I loved philosophy in college, I took 2 classes and the class discussions are something that can rarely be emulated anywhere else, but it seems like one of those "complimentary" degrees.
Quite a few English and History professors have majored in it. But rarely use it if ever.
Also noticed a few people who are deans or run a hospital have as well.
There are quite a few other careers out there where Philosophy would look nice to have but not necessary.
One of the Director's at my office is a Philosophy major.
I loved the part where no matter what you wish to study, you are secretly majoring in some form of mathematics to prove you are using a "rigorous, qunatitative model".
The Poli-Sci one was the best.

Nice stuff. The Chronicle of Higher education did a survey of academics a few years ago. I think less than 1/2 of the faculty at four-year colleges and universities would recommend the career to their children. And these were the permanent staff!

I absolutely LOVE the bit about the narcissistic nineteen year olds. My advice to anyone looking to get into academia is don't do it immediately after you get your degree. Try a few other things first.
The word 'Philosophy' now makes me angry to the point where if i was a sleeper agent trained by the [Insert suitably villainous foreign nation here] that would be my code phrase...

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Are you saying that as an organic chemist?
Because the structures of carbon based molecules are often quite intricate, and require a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry, along with an ability to conceptualise highly abstract shapes and arrangements.
I mean, if you found it easy, that's great, but I can see how someone could find it hard. (I certainly did!)

Hmmm. I'm not quite sure that all organic chemistry can be boiled down to that. I don't see how it's harder than other areas of chemistry particularly, but I wouldn't class it as an easy subject.
Easier than physical chemistry I would reckon, any chemistry requiring Calculus 3 and Physics 2 must be tough. Biochemistry is a lot like organic except for more essays, then again it could just be my personal experience because our Biochemistry teacher is a researcher with tenure.
Which reminds me, any of you Brits minding sending over your protein databases? SCOP seems nice enough.
Well ours were the same way, given the reactants and told to make the product or given products and told to give reactants.
Now its just things like explaining how proteins fold, how translation occurs, and how metabolism works. Explaining how phospholipid bilayers form and work is something else, especially when you have to explain the types of proteins that interact with them, how they interact, and why they interact. The tests are basically 3 essays in 1 hour and then some fill in the blanks and multiple choice in an hour.
Was really annoyed with trying to determine which amino acids should and should not be used to substitute for one another.

Why on earth would you need Calc. 3 for chemistry?
Because we're getting physical, physical.

No it isn't. It's more than that-- if it was merely putting models together it'd be easy to ace It's also a matter of memorizing tons of rules of various types of reactions, which are quite complex and sometimes even contradictory.

I fully accept that for every reaction there is an equal amount of exceptions to the reaction.
Also, can't make mechanics without know the rules.
