As the title states the topic follow. I turned out well, but not quite as I had hoped. I know your first won't be a master piece but I can't help but feel a little dissatisfied. I'll describe my method after the pics for anyone concerned.

Sorry a bit blurry, camera phone.

The two on the right are how I used to paint...

Again I just really feel like it's missing some kind of finishing touch. I also think I went a little too heavy on the metalic colors as well, especially the shining gold.

My process was as follows:
1. Primed black
2. painted chains boltgun metal
3. black ink washed boltgun
4. painted red gore, leaving thin lines of black in the crevices
5. painted a 50/50 mix red gore/blood red trying to leave a thin line of the previous red gore
6. painted dwarf bronze
7.painted shining gold
8. washed gold areas in devlan mud
9. painted interior areas of blood red
10. did eyes tassel

How can I make the next one better?

Highlight with 50/50 blazing orange blood red on the red areas

The reds are fairly solid already. Good contrast.
My main suggestion would be to use black/brown wash/ink over your silver areas to add depth. Red/Brown wash/ink over gold would also do well.
Second would be to go over and carefully highlight the green hair tuft. Skull at the end of it looks unpainted though.

Thirdly, I'd go with something along the lines of TKG's suggestion.

I wont go blazing orange, since.. you get a real orange-iey feeling to it. I'd rather use vermin brown mixed with red.
Just a little bit more eye soothing it is then.

And maybe about the gold, start from tin bitz > dwarf bronze overbrush > Devlan wash > Dwarf bronze highlight, shining gold on the far edges.
It gives a very warm gold. Which you could always tone down (or just give colour to) with baal red, levaithan purple or somehitng.

But what you've got now is a good tabletop quality. But you can crank it up for sure!
Just keep at it. Good luck, and let us see more results.

Thanks all for the tips. Per TKG's suggestions I attempted the 50/50 highlight mix but as Deefect pointed out the whole model already has a slightly orange tone so it didn't really pop unless it was blaze orange by itself, which I didn't really care for. I'm starting a 2nd attempt and this time instead of painted all the plates over this the blood red, I'll just try to use it as the highlight after the 50/50 RG & BR coat and an ink wash. Stay tuned.

So here is attempt two. I was much much happier throughout my progression and was getting the hang of it. The final product is close, but the highlights still give it a bit more orange than I'd like, but I think I know how to fix it, we'll have to see on the third attempt haha. So again I humbly ask for your expert advice and opinions.

I took a few progression shots this time in case it turned out bad at the end.

This is before the devlan mud wash

Same here, I was really really please with the overall red.

After the wash. Plates were a bit dark so I did a light coat of the 50/50 mix again just aiming for the center of large plate areas.

Final product.

Final.

Final.

Here are the steps this time:
1) Base chaos black
2) paint gun/chains boltgun metal
3) black ink x2 over chains/BG metal
4)painted plates Red Gore leaving line of black
5)painted plates 50/50 RG and blood red
6)did a second light coat of 50/50
7) painted brass trim in 50/50 mix of tin bitz and dwarf bronze
8) devlan mud washed entire model
9) another light coat 50/50 RG and BR over plates
10) light dusting of brass in dwarf bronze
11) highlighted brass in shining gold
12) highlighted plates with blood red

In the end even with only using the blood red as the highlight it still comes off as a bit orange to me. I may just try to scale everything down a shade darker and use the 50/50 to highlight, or do it the same, but use a 4th/5th layer of the 50/50 red mix for highlights. The brass came out better and is nearly there I think but still a bit too much of it, I may just try painting a bit less of the trim in brass.

Whatcha think Dakka?
