I want to make a couple Big Mek's with KFF's for my Ork army, but I never liked using the non-customizable models as I like my HQ's especially to look unique. Specifically I was wondering what I would use as the Ork body, and then I planned to make some sort of KFF for his back and use burna arms. Any ideas?

While a Big Mek isn't as big as a Warboss, he is certainly bigger than a boy I would use a Plastic Nob as a base, that way you are open to lots of conversion opportunities. Things you can use for a KFF are Comm Units from IG, SM Backpacks, Sentinel Engines, Buggy Engines...really, the sky is the limit when it comes to a bit of glue and an exacto knife. Experiment, have fun, and don't be scared to ruin things because with Orks it's really hard to. A proppa Mek becomes Proppa by learnin' from his mistakes

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness. ADB |

Shameless self promotion!!!
(Sorry, but I thought this guy might give you some ideas)
He's just a Nob with some extra bits to make his Eavy armor. The wrench is from the Lootaz box and the backpack is an old metal Killa Kan tank with tubes, springs and bits for the KFF projectors.

Hell yes, that's what I'm looking for! I'd love more pics of custom Big Meks for ideas. I figured the KFF will be the fun part, it should help empty out my bit box.
Thanks for the replies!

Well, here's a side pic, doesn't really show more than the front/back pics.
Like Dez was saying, just goof around with different designs until you find something you like:

Thanks for the comment xD
They are from the 4th ed. Starting box set "Battle for Marcagge". They were the SM shield generators.

Unfortunately, the lighting in my house is so poor (combined with the fact that I'm using a cellphone camera) that I cannot get a good shot of my big mek until the sun comes back up in the morning. He is, however, one of my favourite konvershuns.
I started with a body from the WHFB Black Orks, added the backpack and head from a standard mekboy, one arm has a twinlink dakkagun from the warbikers box, and the other arm is the buzzsaw from the painboy. The shoulder plating over the buzzsaw arm is the armour for the front wheel of a warbike. I then greenstuffed a battered iron gob on him, and gave him an antenna propped from his back, but I don't honestly know where I got that bit. To date, the antenna represents his KFF, but I don't really feel it has as much presence as it should. I'm considering doing a more conventional apparatus behind him at a later date.
I consider him to be in mega armour, leading my squad of MANZ. Assuming the weather isn't poor enough to block out the sun in the morning, I'll probably edit to get a picture of him up.

If you've ever picked up a box of Lootas/Burnas, the Mekboys contained therein are generally considered useless in-game, but make for great conversion fodder. While most prefer to base their Big Meks on Nob bodies, the Mekboy head certainly looks the part and the KMB can be chopped up to provide a control unit (lop off the front half of the gun and run wires to the backpack) and shield projector bits (the unused front half as general worky bits, the ball as a zappy node, etc.).

I've made a couple of KFF Big Meks, they both started as Nobz (well nob biker bodies with Boyz legs, they were all I had at the time). As stated by other posters, just throw stuff together and see what works, sort of how the Orks themselves work anyway.
Also, as Oadie mentioned, the loota/burna box is a great resource for these.
