If I were to base an army entirely on techmarines and thunderfire cannons how competitive could I make it. Would it even have a hope? Or would it be doomed to lose most battles?

I keep looking over the book at my local game store and I just love adaptus mechanus. I think when I'm done converting my guard I'm going to go for it.

It is sad though because I always wanted to start an Ork army, but sadly I always choose something else over them.

I am a proud user of thunderfire cannons, used properly they can wreck just about any force. Used in groups of 3, well, they cause fear in troops.

Anyway, I read your want for a techmarine army, and after spending some work I came up with the following 1850 list for you:

1 Master for the forge with conversion beamer
1 Techpriest with power weapon, 5 servitors with 2 plasma cannons
1 Techpriest with power weapon, 5 servitors with 2 plasma cannons
1 Techpriest with power weapon, 5 servitors with 2 plasma cannons
10 Marines with lascannon, melta gun, power fist, combi melta
And razorback with twin linked lascannon
10 Marines with lascannon, melta gun, power fist combi melta
And razorback with twin linked lascannon
5 vanguard veterans with 4 power swords and 4 melta bombs
1 Thunderfire cannon
1 Thunderfire cannon
1 Thunderfire cannon

The thunderfire cannons will wreck anything infantry like, and by the time it gets close you can easily finish it off. Your plasma cannons are effectively Your MEQ and TEQ solution for shooting.
The marine squads will work as follows: combat squad them, hide the razorbacks in cover, place the 5 man with lascannon in the rear and place the 5 man with sarge both meltas towards the front. These are your primary anti-tank, though your plasma cannons can deal with light vehicles. You may also switch out one of the plasma cannons or all of them for multi-meltas, it's the same price, though I wouldn't recommend it.
After that, your master of the forge just gets placed, maybe attached to a lascannon team.
Following that, just use all the reinforcement you need to give everything a 3+ coversave. Deploy in ruins.

The vanguard were something I added to provide support that can drop and help were ever you need them. Kinda liked the feel of a few veterans dropping in the save to forge world.

In terms of how well this could deal with other lists, it would wreck anything but armor guard.

Hope it inspires you to make a list to your liking.

Razorbacks can only be used with squads of 6 or less, so that list is out of the window. Plus I think you mean TechMARINES instead of TechPRIESTS, and plasma cannons tend to go awry with Servitors. Good list other than that though.

No, you can still take the Razorbacks. From the FAQ:

Q: Some Space Marine squads can take a Razorback as
a dedicated transport. A Razorback has a transport
capacity of six models. Can you still choose this as a
dedicated transport for a squad with more than six
models? (p77)
A: Yes.

Codex Marines have no such restriction. Some other codexs may.

Cool list, thanks for the ideas guys, I do appritiate it. I will start collecting this in a few months. Does anyone run a list like this? Might be able to catch someone off guard with it.

You could build an army using three Thunderfire cannons, one or two Masters of the Forge with conversion beamer, a whole mess of dreadnoughts and tactical Marines using the Iron Hands kit. It could be pretty cool, and you'd WRECK footslogging hordes. Anything with an armor value would be tougher to handle, but you could make an okay shooting army.

What I want to get:

Master of the forge with conversion beamer.

Dreadnought with a multi-melta or lascannon.

Techmarine with servitors and two plasma cannons.

Two tactical squads and atleast one razorback probably two.

Two or three thunderfire cannons.

Maybe even do two dreds and a techmarine crew with a few razorbacks to.even it out. I don't want a perfect list, just something fun and different to play with my noob friends at the shop.

Get rid of the melta;s and 1 PS, and get a PF. You have an extra 10 pts for something else
