Ok so I am learning the 40k rules still even though I have played two 1000 pt games so far. One with SM Scraps (whatever the guy had left after making his list) and one with my limited Tau army. I figured since i have 2 friends who bought armies (varying size) and my sister who also bought an army that I would try and make a few Kill Team games. I was advised on a few more things by users here on Dakka (THANKS!) and now have the first of my noobie Kill Team games ready to post! The secondary objective here is to maybe suck some more interested friends into the game as well For ease of play we cut out some extra rules or accidentally forgot them.... Such as we dropped the "specialist" rule for Kill Team. Force Organization (for those who don't know) is 0-2 troops, 0-1 Elite and 0-1 Fast attack. Also each unit acts as its own squad.

Game 1

Benamint (Me) vs. Otona (My sister, Autumn)

My list:

1 Lictor
10 Termagants
3 Tyranid Warriors

Aut's list:
3 Harlies
3 Wyches
5 Kabalite Warriors
3 Scourges

Table

Tyranid Deployment: Sorry for the crap pic.... Wrong setting....

Dark Eldar Deployment: Sorry same as above...

Turn 1

My Turn
Movement:
Tyranids move forward 6”

Shooting:
Tyranid Warrior shoots and hits 2 wyches, wounding 1. My Otona fails the wych save and one wych dies.

Otona’s Turn
Movement:
Wyches and Harlequins run up between 12 and 8 inches. Looking to assault.
3 warriors hold back and 2 on the hill move forward 6”. Scourges jump 6” forward so one can shoot into the gants advancing along the table edge.

Shooting:
Scourge unleashes killing one gants. A warrior wounds a Lictor and the other warriors whiff on the tranid warriors.

Assaults:
A harlequins and 2 wyches assault my tyranid warrior and 3 gants rush to defend. She whiffs in combat and my warrior shreds her harlie, her wyches motivate and stay in.

Turn 2

My Turn
Movement:
Nids move forward and lictor runs 12”.

Shooting:
Ouch bad turn for DE, leaving my sister muttering “Death, death, murder, murder, death….” Warrior kills a harlie, gant whiffs on a scourge, gant and warrior combined kill 2 kabalites.

Assaults:
Wyches strike first but whiff, I look at her rules and find we missed the wargear wych rules… I let her retry and she uses hydra gauntlets, hitting and kiling 1 gant. In counter I kill 1 wych and we draw combat.

Otona’s Turn
Movement:
Otona shuffles troops around.

Shooting:
uses harlies pistol to melta wound my lictor and rapid fires him with kabalite, whiffs rapids with another and whiff again…. Bad shooting and dice rolls for my poor sis. A peeking scourge peels my lictor… she prepares to rapid fire and shard carbine my lonely single table edge gant. Snake eyes from the warrior and here comes the shards from the scourges. Gant down :(

Assaults:
Wyches whiff. I hit but she saves, I win combat. She falls back 8” and I consolidate 1”…

Turn 3

My Turn
Movements:
I move my guys up again 6”

Shooting:
I whiff in all shooting

Assault:
I assault my 2 tyranid warriors and a gant into her wych and her harlie moves to help. She whiffs, I attack and kill the wych then whiff on
Her harlie. She then hit and runs to get out. She runs 6” and I consolidate 2” towards a group.

Otona’s Turn
Movement, she mores her guys into better spots

Shooting:
fire on my flank, putting 1 wound on my warrior and killing a gant. In the center, whiffs scourge and then murderizes my warrior with melta and a rapid fire.

Turn 4

My Turn
Movement:
I move closer full 6” again

Shooting:
I open up killing one scourge on the flank and whiffing a lot

Otona’s Turn
Movement:
A little shuffle but pretty much straight to shooting
Shooting:
She meltas and wounds my warrior in the center, whiffs with a scourge. Then wounds with a kabalite then kills with the last kabalite. My warrior on the flank suffered the same treatment…..

Turn 5

My Turn
Morale roll! And promptly failed…..

GAME OVER! Winner Otona’s Dark Eldar!

Interesting battle. Haven't played small games in quite a while but I suppose it is much simpler for newer players.

Between you and your sister....who's older and who got whom into 40k gaming?

Well I am older (18) and she is the younger (16). I have been wargaming on and off for a while but just recently got with an actual group. I got her into 40k gaming since she is pretty artsy so I figured if I could get her painting some cool guys then I might get her interested in the game attached to it! SUCCESS!!!! Now to get some pics up....

I really enjoyed the small game! I feel I should make myself clear on a few things too. Though I got my sister into 40K she had never played any kind of table top before. I have played FOW for a few years on and off before hand. I have no excuses for losing really other than I got tired of constantly looking up assault stats and referencing the chart. I think if I had pushed forward with my Tyranid warriors instead of just shooting I coulda done just fine. Instead I opted to sit back and get ripped apart by shard fire and melta.... This was my first game with my new Nids so I quite enjoyed it though I learned that if they get wounded.... They are gonna die... And I think I woulda lost WAY sooner had my sister not been rolling all 1s and 2s for the first 2 or 3 turns. Once her rolling kicked in I was toast!

Nice to see people getting into the hobby!

Assuming you're OK with constructive feedback; the Lictor should have died from the melta wound. It's S8, while the Lictor is T4, which means that "Instant Death" (reference pg. 26 of the rulebook) would've kicked in, resulting in a woked Lictor.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

Great stuff, lovely sense of early innocence to it.
Enjoy these early games, they are the ones you'll remember most

On the batrep itself a few tips.
Try and make sure your pics arent blurry and of a decent quality, it adds to the rep immensely and get people involved.
Dont use text colors like dark blue in the text, it makes it impossible to read and might turn people off reading. Use white and bold it if you have to.
Imho the best reps combine overall shots of the battlefield each turn so viewers can see how things are progressing and then some "action" shots, showing important fights or incidents.

Good luck with future games!

Thanks guys! @AlmightWalrus - Yes I am 100% fine with all CC. I remembered the AP can = insta gib but couldn't figure out how to figure it from. Thanks very much! Really I guess it didn't make toooooo much of a difference seeing as he didn't do much, but she coulda split fire and killed more guys. Thus sealing my opinion that I woulda lost a lot faster.
@Ratius - I will definetly try, the deployment pics were the cam was left on close up due to having taken pics of paint jobs earlier and thus screwed it up :p And yes I noticed that blue screw up... I tried to make the text bigger but it didn't work :p the effect boxes are there, but the size never changed.I agree with the pics with the bat reps. Here's the catch: Actually remembering to take pics! We were constantly lookin up rules and charts so I didn't have much extra time to remember pics I will try and get more next time..... Thanks! hope I can get a few "followers" to keep an eye out for more of my Noobie Kill Team Games!

@Necronboy - It is VERY fun! It also lets you kinda try out new units or armies for very cheap. Its pretty simple to set up and play as well. Our game took a while due to the constant checking the rules, but I have no doubt that with 40K players who have the basic rules down and to hit charts known pretty well, it could go quite smoothly and quickly!

@darkcloud- ROFL! Hey man its all good in the Zeon family But seriously it won't hurt to get more girls into the game to diffuse the geeky 40 year old virgin guy who lives in his mom's basement. Yes it is very good to get into the game and very VERY smple. Not to mention fun!!!

This was a pretty cool game. I recently got my friend Amy into playing. She wooped me in her first game lol. Then again she did have the manager of the GW store "helping" her a bit And i was trying not to play using any complicated rulings or tactics so it would be a smoother game. It's always good to see more people getting into the hobby.

Does seem that the way to get girls into warhammer is appeal to their creative and artsy side.

Yes it really is! As it was my sister sculpted a lot with clay and painted. So I didn't think it would be too difficult to get her in. There are enough armies there to find the "right one" to suit pretty much anyone! Only problem is she is used to painting watercolors... Not the same on minis, so she really struggles with highlighting since in watercolor you blend it all together and it get progressively lighter. As supposed to the almost "armor trim" highlight that we usually use in mini painting.

My friend whooped my ass as well when I taught her how to play. She complained when my Tau annihilated her termie squad but her tactical squad got revenge. I pretty much beat myself since I knew exactly how to counter myself lol

@Enigma Crisis- Well I knew a little of how the DE should be played so I'd just lay my sisters options out and let her choose. That coupled with my never having played Tyranids kinda assured she would win. But I never really "talked my way into a loss" it was all well played by her. Always good to get more players in I actually talked another friend into it and he is going to play with his homeschool group in Maryland today!

That is awesome! Next month my LGS is going to be doing a kill team tournament and I volunteered myself with setting up the scenarios and boy I now understand why my friend "complains" when he puts things together for the tournament and then has to be a judge

Great battle report.

In Ottawa we have an event that runs a kill team tourny, ones coming up next month. the rules were modified to play a proper tournament with as to o rules confusion. It seems to be quite a hit. heres the link with the rules in the first post.

Ahhh ok I think those are pretty much the rules I found from Adepticon 2011. Thanks though! I really like Kill Team games, I think its a great way to get involved because of the low points (hence low money) costs. Definitely going to keep playing KT games. I think I will also start making kill teams for other forces. Probably CSM and Orks next!
