Subject: Guardsmen Renegades - The Quest for a Moderately Effective Army
Well, I guess the best way to describe how this project of mine all started was me consuming a little too much rum.... after which I decided I was going to go work on some Guardsmen I had got used from my cousin awhile back. I tried painting what was there but it just looked bad, so being the brilliant individual I am I threw everything into a simple green bath. Not just the used models, but my previously owned and for the most part painted army.
By the time I recovered enough to figure out what I had done, the damage was wrought. I now needed to repaint virtually my entire army. Then I had an idea. My foot guard had never been very effective on the tabletop fighting in the Emperor's name, so why not have them throw their lot in with the Chaos gods to see if they could do any better (not that they could do worse as shown by their 0 - 14 record in 4 months of last year) Here's a picture of where the majority sits now
Everything in the tub has been scrubbed of most of the heavy paint, and is just soaking to remove the residual simple green.
Part of the inspiration for this project came after re-reading 'All Quiet on the Western Front' for the fourth time. Some of the Guants Ghosts stuff also helped along with the process, especially the book where they are fighting on Aexe Cardinal (forgot the name ). Conveniently this army will allow me to play in a 40k campaign specifically designed around trench warfare that I am helping to organize with a few friends.
I started on the first squad, which in the grand scheme of things is going to be an 'assault unit'. Please note I use that term very loosely
I've mostly finished building the sergeant, vox trooper, and the melta trooper (or whatever the renegade equivalent(s) are)
I also started on some custom bases for the army. I can take no credit for the process of making the mud bases as it was something I saw on a DKoK thread on Dakka and loved. My twist on it is that my bases will be a grey mud rather than brown
I want the army to look like its only recently turned to Chaos, so there aren't going to be a lot of mutations on the rank and file troopers. I will be saving them for the command units and other 'centerpiece' models. I plan on having the assault squads (melta militia units) all based on the bases shown above so it looks like they are advancing across no mans land. The firebase militia unit will be based so as to look like they are occupying a trench with duckboards underfoot.
To finish off, I thought I would post up the starting 1500 point list I want to work towards.
HQ Company Command Platoon - Vox, Chaos Banner, flamer, Exalted Champion w. powersword (91) Anti-tank Support Squad - 3xMissle Launchers (95) Fire Support Squad - 3xAutocannons (95)
Looking forward to seeing this army the list is simple and effective and will give many less thought out armies a run for their money looking at that list I wonder how my Dark Eldar would handle it... Nice blog mate subscribed.

I did a little more work on the first squad this morning. I finished off the meltagun guy and added 2 more standard troopers. Pics below
I should have the first squad finished either tonight or tomorrow.
One issue I'm running into though is how to convert the 'counts as' Bloodgor squad. My initial idea was to use Chaos Marauders with dual hand weapons to achieve the bezerker style look I'm aiming for, but I have no idea what actually comes on the sprues or if it would match the look of the rest of the army. Suggestions are welcome!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Look what turned up this afternoon!
I'm planning on using all of it for my Renegade project (big surprise). What I need to figure out though is how to mount the heavy bolters for the trench squads. I'm using the missle launcher arms for missle launchers (predictably) and will be using the tripod mounts for the autocannons. I was considering using the missle/mortar mounts for the heavy bolters, but I'm not sure how I would trim them down so it would look like they fit.
I also finished the first squad. Pics are below
Heres a shot of everyone together on painting bases
As always, comments are welcome!

I managed to finish off the second squad for the assault platoon this evening. I wound up building 2 guys with the reeeally old Chaos bolters, so I'm going to switch one of the lasgunners out of the first squad to make room for him. They're still just going to count as flashlights though I also added a couple spike tips off the Chaos vehicle sprue to some of the more plain looking troopers. I figured even though I wasn't shooting for an overly chaotic look overall, a few spikes here and there wouldn't look out of place. Onto the pics!
And a pic of the squad and the start of the platoon
I also did a little bit of work on an Ork Warbiker for one of my friends, figured I'd throw a shot of him up as well
As always, comments and suggestions are welcome!
Note:Sorry for some of the pics being not up to a decent standard. I was having issues holding my phone steady. Its cold in my basement

Got a little bit done today on the renegades by throwing together a couple missle launcher troopers. Trying to find/make bases for them at the moment though so I'm not too sure when they'll be finished. With regard to the bases for the missle teams should I make them so it looks like they are standing on the firestep of a trench searching/firing at targets, or have them based on the same mud base style as the assault platoon are going to be on? I'm not positive as the tactics I will be using for them is sit back and shoot, but I do want the army to be a cohesive force, and I'm worried different looking bases will detract from that.
Opinions and comments are always valued!

Just read through what you have so far and I am wicked psyched to see another freedom fighter standing against Imperial tyranny! Subbed and will be back for more. If you'd like to chat about conversions or get links to some of the other guys I talk to about IG Renegades / Cultists / etc drop me a line.
I'll be back!

I finished the models for the missle squad. All I need to do now is to get some 60mm bases (either bought or made) and figure out if I want them firing from a trench line or just in the mud like the entire assault platoon to date.
And a squad shot
With regard to the bases I'm really thinking that it would be cool to have them firing from a trench with a much more minimal amount of thick mud on the base. It doesn't make sense that a support weapon platoon would be advancing across no-mans land with the assault troops, but thats just me.
I think I nailed down what could be a decent color scheme. I'm thinking of going with a dirty yellow cloth with unpainted metal armor, as the fluff I'm writing essentially supports these guys having gotten rid of the more 'imperial' look color wise when they were essentially left for dead. If anyone wants to suggest a different scheme, feel free, as the one I have is only in the conceptual stage.

Well, I finally decided to bite the bullet and get started on some painting As much as I dislike it and as bad as I think I am, it has to be done.
First up is something that even I struggle to paint poorly, a base (ooohs and aaaahs)
I wound up going with a more traditional colored mud base as the grey one I tried looked awful. Like really awful. So awful I will never post it. Ever
As far as this one goes, I can't take credit for anything as far as the recipe for the mud or the coloring goes. That lies with the creator of the stunning DKoK blog right here on Dakka. I feel bad as I can't remember his name at the moment
Next up is a WIP 60mm base for one of the missle teams. Like I was saying I wanted to have them on trench bases as it makes no sense as to why they would be advancing along with everyone else. Even when I start gaming they will park themselves somewhere and sit. That said, I may try having a different base depending on suggestions I get with regard to them.
The bigger mud section (to the right of the base) stands just tall enough that the standing missle crew guy can fire over the lip. I'm trying not to make a deep trench with a firestep as it seems like waaay to much work for a 30 some point weapons team.
Lastly, I slapped some paint on the first sergeant I built for the assault squad. In fact its the first model I built for this army, so it seems only fitting he gets painted first. He's very WIP mind you (just 1 color is on and it needs another coat)
Out of curiousity, I figured I would post up a scratchbuild I've been working on for awhile. Its just a chimera, but I'll be damned if I have to spend however many hundreds of dollars buying the new ones when I liked the old ones better. I thought I would try scratchbuilding some to see how well they came out and to see if the tradeoff in time was worth the savings.
Thats all for now folks! Comments welcome as always!

The bases look decent already and I know will be excellent once you have them "finished". One note on that however, may want to avoid too much overhang.

I do agree about avoiding excessive overhang on the bases. I'll get a shot up of my 'cheap' bases that I made for the weapons teams later today.
Automatically Appended Next Post: In other news I have been working on the test model for the army. I'm personally liking how its turning out, though it remains to be seen how the finished model will look. I've also done a bit more work on the chimera, including making a bunch more track plates and hulls for the scratchbuilt chimera type vehicles. I've got enough track plates done up for another 7 vehicles, so I shouldn't run out any time soon.
I will try to get some shots of the base, test model, and WIP stuff up ASAP. I'm just having a few 'real' life issues

Automatically Appended Next Post: UPDATE WITH PICS!!
Well, I finally managed to get the first model finished off. I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out, as on average my painting skill is rather meh. I think when the army is displayed as a whole though it should look alright.
I also got some more of the first squad primed while I was waiting for the model to dry.
And even though it has nothing to do with the renegades per se, here's a Steel Legion model I painted up for a rather long project that I have in the works.
I apologize for the poor quality of the images. I use my phone for a camera as my actual camera is far far worse. I also need to get a lightbox of sorts to make the pics look a bit better. That said I hope you enjoy!

I haven't played a game yet, more so because I just have the one platoon assembled than anything else. I really do think this is more of a 'fun' army than a competitive one just going off what the rules read like. Thats not to say they shouldn't do well, as most of the armies I come up against aren't overly well written

I'd have thought they played similar to infantry based guard, your probably right about them not being overly competetive. Main reason is probably their vet equivalent is an elite choice rather than troop.
militia squad vets can't take power weapons so you can't power blob which hurts, however you can combine them with the militia command squad and hide a power fist in a blob.
I don't recognise the Bloodgor attack squad are they in book 6/7?
you seem to be taking a lot of vox which suggests your not planning to blob? or is it just for fluff's sake?
PM me and ask me about Warpath Wargames Norwich or send me an email

you can combine them with the militia command squad and hide a power fist in a blob.
I wasn't aware you could blob the squads, so that does help substantially. Thank you kind sir. I can tell you the list will be changed to have a powerfist in the command group now. I will also be dropping some of the voxes in the assault unit to reflect the fact they are joining up.
As far as the Bloodgor go, I believe it is IA7 that I was using for the list. Essentially they are just the Khorne based list (out of the 3 also including undivided and nurgle)

Well I don't have any pics yet, but I managed to pretty much get the entirety of the first squad completely done. They are just waiting on the bases now. Once thats done I will paint the HWS and then second squad. I found another renegade blog on dakka that almost had the same paint scheme as mine, except the armor looked waaaay dirtier. The guy said he just heavily washed it in devlan mud, so since I liked the way it looked so much I'll probably go back and redo the armor on the already painted guys.

i gottta say, im liking what im seeing! Alot of renegade stuff is cool cause of the conversions and ideals which you can make. Still bloody heretics but still awesome. consider me subscribed
Seeing as the other progress log I started seems to die with no interest, I figured I'd dust the old Renegades off and actually finish them. I took a rather long break from GW hobby's, and have recently had my interest reignited due to browsing the forums again. Having a colossal amount of Flames of War to paint also kind of drives me to want to break up the monotony of Romanian infantry.
Expect a large update in the next few days as I get everything dusted off and take stock of what I have

I haven't found a way to make the Bloodgor squad yet, so I'm looking into purchasing a chunk of the Dark Vengeance cultists to use as a suitable stand in. The assault platoon (meltaguns and no heavy weapons) has been expanded to include a third squad seeing as I am able to blob the whole unit together. I've also put together my heavy weapons as lascannons instead of missle launchers. In the few games I ran with the ML, they had a tendency to underperform against anything with moderate armor. And with the way the army has performed, I desperately need to increase the amount of AT capability. As far as completed units, I have both platoons completely assembled (only the first squad of the assault platoon is painted though....) I tore apart an old leman russ I had lying around to make a Demolisher for the army, and will hopefully be adding a second Russ to that at some point. The lascannons have all been assembled for the HQ gun squad as well.
Hopefully I can get my camera back in the next little while so I can throw up some army shots
