How many Space Marines does it take to screw in a lightbulb.
6, 1 techpriest and 5 tacticals that stand around trying to pose like badasses.
An Ork, Space Marine and Eldar are walking down the road. They see a Chaos portal that has a sign on it. It says: 'say what is true or be sucked in'. The Space Marine says: "I think I'm the bravest" and walks past safely, the Eldar says: "I think I'm the most agile" and walks past safely. The Ork says: "Me thinks..." and gets sucked into the portal.

Use the money on the Army Builder program.
You, and your opponents, will not regret it.

I've never seen any reason to use anything other than excel.
It's quite easy to set up a template and formulas to use to get output similar to army builder.

If you or any of your friends speak German I highly recommend this program, it's an army builder that's very easy to use, has practically no mistakes and is completely free: http://www.onlinecodex.de/forum/portal.php
Most of the times you can figure the names in German out anyways since they are pretty similar to the ones in English (Space Marines, Predators, Leman Russ, all the same). I usually just make my lists in this program and then translate them to English.
Hope this helps.

you can even fix mistakes if you find them.

Have you tried uninstall and re-installing it? barring that, try saving the list to a different location.

It's iPad / iPhone only, but I've been using an app called Quartermaster. I've had to enter the data myself, but it supports exporting that information to other devices and exporting lists to email and forum code.
Plus, since it's for a handheld OS I can take it with me to my local store.

I have not found the new necron files yet.
you can input them yourself, if you want.
Its not that tough to learn how to do that, you just got to mess around with Battle Scribe for a bit and you will get it.
Its not that tough to add units into the file creator.

I second the pen and paper. You should know your codex so well that you have most units' costs and upgrades memorized, at least the ones you use a lot. If you don't, then you need to read your codex another dozen times, and not just for the purpose of points memorization. Anyone can copy a netlist. Only people who really know their codices can do better.
Steelmage99 wrote:Use the money on the Army Builder program.

I've never used army builder, but I have certainly regretted it when my opponents have.
Army builder goes WAY overboard with the detail that it's often really difficult for me to figure out what my opponent is bringing due to pure information overload. I've seen a single imperial guard infantry platoon take up a page and a half in army builder before, which is way out of place. I almost wonder if they use it specifically to hide which upgrades that they're taking.
If there was a way where you could tell army builder not to print off every single stat for every single model (yes, devestators have the same statline as a tac marine, I don't need to see them again), or to print off every single stupid upgrade (yes, ALL of my power-armored models come with frag and krak grenades), and special rule (yes, ALL of my marines come with ATSKNF), and just simplify it to the pertinent information, like how statlines are actually different, or special rules that just that squad has, or specific upgrades, then I'd be more in favor of army builder.
As it is, against experienced players with decent handwriting, I'd take a hand-written list every time over something some software put out.
... especially when said software contains occasional errors...
