Black Templar Recruit Undergoing Surgeries
|
Hello,
So I've been looking for some Forge world dreadnoughts for my Black Templar army and pretty much the only people selling them on eBay are from Russia or China. I know that those countries are known for selling knock off copies. So my question is. Has anyone bought Forge world products from the Russian or Chinese sellers on eBay? Are they of Forge world quality? Are they knock offs?
Thanks for your help!

Why not buy from Forgeworld direct? The shipping costs from Russia/China to US are even worse than what FW charges.
Anyway, it depends on the seller. There are unscrupulous recasters everywhere even in the U.K and U.S, I've bought a FW thunderbolt pilot from a guy in Russia which turned out to be an original (I assume unless if it was a perfect recast which I doubt).
Forgeworld uses light grey resin most of the time, however they sometimes change material. Off coloured resin often indicates a recast, so looking at pictures often helps.
I've noticed that pre-primed miniatures (not painted mind you, just primed) are often recasts, so it may be something to watch out for.
My best advice is to look at the pictures of what you want to buy and make a judgement, it's the only thing that you can do to determine whether or not the produce is of good enough quality, especially in the second hand market.

Why even bother buying Forge World off of ebay, your not going to save any money and your going to either loose out or complicate the customer service the Forgeworld is known for.

I bought what I thought were legitimate Forgeworld kits from Russia.
I haven't bought any FW kits from china but have seen them on Ebay before.
In my honest oppinion they wernt good in quality compared to official FW products.
I find thier prices are only slightly better and are bad quality for what they cost.
My Advice just stick to legitimate FW models.

They also use cream coloured resin.
This was direct from Forgeworld.

Hey man, if you can find a recast that's not made with the cheap arse compressed saltine cracker BS that GW and friends uses for equal or less cost, go for it. For a company with no PR, massive dick CEOs and Mat Ward, the company shouldn't be a concern at all.
For those ebay stores, its real hard to tell if what they're selling are counterfeit or not from just the pictures but the vendors at least sell with a wysiwyg policy. Why are you people discriminating against russians and chinese sellers anyway? There's no way to tell a counterfeit from an original or used with any normal vendor. unless they specifically say NIB.

I don't think you can't save money on forgeworld legally, I just think it's difficult.
I've seen plenty of real and domestic forgeworld auctions on ebay at far below the fw price with better shipping. The catch is that they tend to be from unpopular armies.
FW tau suits for instance are regularly sold on ebay for very competitive prices, but the big awesome things generally are not.

Yikes Yikes Yikes... Where to begin. You can't steal a company's IP just because it has "no PR, massive 'dick' CEOs, and Mat[t] Ward". When it comes down to it, they are their models and casts. If you don't Like GW/Forge World, buy different models. Buy hasslefree. Buy legos. If you want GW stuff, you kinda' have to buy GW stuff.
"There's no way to tell a counterfeit from an original"
Well. If it doesn't come with a Forge World order-form, forge world assembly instructions, and Forge World packaging, it's not forge world.
Lastly, to OP, just get FW from FW. I have around $2000 in FW stuff. Yes, it is heartbreaking everytime I press check out, but it is always worth it. One thing massively problematic is warping and breakage during shipping. I've gotten a bunch of models with slight problems and things snapped on the sprue. FW understands this and will gladly ship out replacements in a timely manner. I'm guessing those chinese/russian sellers won't be so kind...

Thanks all.
I'm still pretty new to table top gaming world and wanted to make sure I wasn't throwing money away.
I'm glad most out there respect the product.
Yes the prices hurt but if we stop paying it, they stop making the things we love to spend our money on .
I asked around and I can save a lot of cash on the dreadnoughts i want by getting the bodies and using the plastic GW arms most say there is not much difference and much cheaper...
For the contemptor im looking at it looks like ill have to go all out.

Yeah, you can generally use the plastic arms just fine and they look good. The Contemptor has its own special arms, but that's about it. That's pretty much the best way you can save money on FW stuff. You can also go through Dakka's own swap shop and hope to get lucky, but it's hit and miss. I managed to get an Iron Warriors dreadnought some time ago for pretty cheap though!

There comes a point when most of us would consider the knockoffs, but the counterfeit stuff isn't even close to being a low enough price for me to consider it.
As far as a company, Forgeworld actually does almost everything right that GW does wrong. My only complaint is I wish they would sell in US so I didn't have to deal with currency issues or international shipping. Most likely its GW's fault anyway.

I've no idea about the china sales, but I do know that the russian ones were amazing. It was not a knock off (checked the resin with the other forgeworld order I'd gotten in earlier) and came decently fast. Everything was in good shape and was cheap. Just make sure you see the pieces all layed out in the picture and not the stock image or one that's base coated and I would suggest you go for it

I don't know which russian ones you are looking at ( I only found one )
I can tell you they are counterfeits . How do I know?
Because 2 months ago I filed complaint and they changed their description to ( this is not a FW version )
then about a month ago they changed the description leaving ForgeWorld out of everything but the item title.
Not to mention the feedback also says so.

How am I stealing IP? I'm not counterfeiting anything, just buying a forgeworld dread on ebay for 20$. For those sellers that MAY be counterfeiting, see below.
TheCaptain wrote:

By that logic, 90% of 40k stuff on ebay is counterfeit. When I buy stuff from the warstore's ebay store, he doesn't exactly include assembly instructions, a copy of the original receipt of purchase from he made from GW, official GW packaging, ect, ect.
For all you know, or don't know, these sellers could be perfectly legit who get special discounts from forgeworld. Do they really? I don't know because I'm not a manager at forgeworld. Again, because I'm not a manager or chief of operations, I have no idea what kind of resin are real FW and what kinds are fake. It also happens that I'm not a resin expert and even FW isn't consistent when it comes to resin coloring.
<General Whine>"Oh but its FW and they're special and don't have other distributors blah blah blah"
Oh my bad, I didn't realize I was speaking to the CEO of Forgeworld.
Now, what people seem to be mixing up is legality and morality.
Is it moral to buy counterfeit goods or knockoffs? Who cares. It doesn't matter. Don't be a morality police, everyone has their own views.
Is it LEGAL to buy counterfeit goods? In the US, it is illegal to knowingly buy counterfeit goods. It is not illegal to buy a knockoff.
If a the page specifically said that it was a recast or counterfeit, you'd be held responsible (and the seller as well) but there is nothing on any of these seller pages to indicate its a fake. Arguing that a FW model on ebay must be fake because it is from China or Russia is simply racist and ignorant. To say its a fake because its being sold cheaper than FW retail is completely missing the point of ebay.
It seems that most people who are against these sellers just happen to be people that have spent quite a bit on the Forgeworld website. Perhaps a bit of jealousy and resentment there?

agree with terranarc, it is easy to see the "i paid 30 pounds for my contemptor so you should too."
I got my contemptor from a store on ebay (one of the russian ones) and i think it is a recast. But after the basecoat with skull white there is no way to say it is a recast. Even before the painting it was already in spectacular shape.
