Great White Shark Spotted in Imperial Beach
A great white shark was spotted off the coast of Imperial Beach on Tuesday, according to city officials.

Lifeguards said the shark was spotted near Imperial Beach Boulevard at 9 a.m. A local took a picture of the dorsal fin, and immediately showed it to officials.

The picture was then sent to a shark research facility, which confirmed the shark was a great white. Researchers believe the shark photographed was between 16 and 18 feet.

The shark reportedly stayed in the area for a moment, then swam on.

"We haven't seen anything like this since the 1950's," said an IB lifeguard captain.

The beach is open, but signs warning people of the sighting have been placed throughout the beach.

That's why they're sending in team 6. The other 5 were called but... well... they were first on the scene... At least by now the shark will be full.

That sounds amazing. I would love to be out there swimming with it. Sharks are just shown as bad through movies and tv. They are actually very nice creatures that don't usually attack unless provoked. Once again amazing.

I assume you're being ironic, because despite their cutesy language, Great White is actually correct.
Most sharks labelled "man-eaters" are nothing of the sort, for the reason that humans are a rubbish source of food for them. What they're looking for is an enormous amount of blubber, and what doesn't a human have? Yes, not even the really lardy ones have enough fat on them to be worth a shark's time. Not only are most shark attacks a case of mistaken identity (the shark mistaking a surfer on a surfboard for a seal, for example), but they are incredibly rare, even in waters where sharks are to be found in abundance.
In other news, a great white shark off a beach? That's pretty badass.

Great white is actually harmless ...unless they have pyrotechnics.

It probably got lost on the way to San Jose.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

This just in, there are fish just off shore in the ocean!!

I guess it is kind of cool, I mean isn't seeing a great white off shore mainly an east coast thing? Here is another link with some more info: http://news.discovery.com/animals/great-white-shark-sightings-have-us-lifeguards-on-alert.html

And yes getting attacked by a shark is a long shot, but here is the wiki page for fatal shark attacks for those keeping score. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal,_unprovoked_shark_attacks_in_the_United_States

I told the wife after seeing too many barracuda of Cancun, give me an underwater chainsaw baby. Texans aren't afraid of anything is they have a working chainsaw.

Yea if Sharks take over Portland, that will be sweet. A bit of ocean rise, and you will Sharks swimming the streets in the Hawthorne area. Good Riddance.

Hmm, lets see. Great Whites are common in the waters north of San Diego and South of it. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?!

Kind of what I thought when I saw the thread too, however the link I posted says in one area there are more seals than usual so now more sharks.

I personally hope it is due to climate change. Soon our coasts will be full of seals breeding like cats, the shark population will quadruple, shark fin soup becomes cheap. We have to eat the seal population to reduce the increasingly aggressive (and increasingly intelligent) shark population. A second unforeseen problem due to our rampant climate change is grizzlies breeding with polar bears, and like the sharks seeking seal populations, they too move south. I am actually a little wound up for this now after Frazz's comment about chainsaws. I picture something a little like the ending of Liam Neeson's movie "The Grey", but with dual wielding chain saws. Now that is BETTER ENDING, I felt bitter and cheated after The Grey....sorry for possible spoiler (not really a spoiler).
