During a match a couple days ago, my opponent used a DC dread with blood talons.
The rules say that for every successful unsaved wound, you gain another attack. My opponent took this as it was an auto hit and he only needed to roll (and reroll) the wounds and there was no requirement to roll to hit.

From the wording of the rule it says he gains an extra attack not another successful hit, but what do you think?
Does he need to roll to hit or only roll (and reroll) to wound?

The rule says attack. An attack must roll to hit.

There's no other way to interpret that.

Since nothing in the Blood Talon rules says that the additional attacks auto hit, then he would have to roll for those additional attacks as normal.

What? No, extra attack still needs to hit.

If it was an auto hit, it would say that it caused an additional hit.

Edit: Double time ninja'd! Reminds me of a movie I once saw...

There is no special rule stating his attacks auto hit, so they don't.

Remember ninjas can't get you if you auto hit.

I believe it's actually "Ninjas always get you because they autohit."

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

Yes, Ninjas auto hit. They never have to roll for it, now do they?

Thank the emperor blood talons don't autohit, otherwise my boyz would have been gone.

Thank you all for the quick responses. I figured that he had to roll to hit but my opponents persistence had me second guessing myself.

Yes they roll to hit, and with a WS of 6, they hit most things on a 3+

I usually kill 7-15 models on the assault, sometimes more, rarely less.

My ba friend beat you. On his wave of attack, he only managed 2 wounds (lots of 1s). Then out of the two wounds, only one extra attack happened. Last thing I know, that extra attack keep wounding and hitting over 10 of my orks (aka the rest of the squad). I never saw a dice roll so many 3+ without failing once.

I usually have to halt my attacks because there are no more targets.

On the same topic, can these extra hits be allocated to other squads?

say a guardsman squad and a priest are charged by the dread, and he allocates all the hits on the priest, kiling him, can the extra hits then be put onto the squad or?

They're extra attacks. You allocate attacks. That should answer your question.

Note that hits != attacks, do not use them interchangeably.

Huh?

Wound allocation has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with splitting attacks.

You guys stink. Every time I roll with blood talons I kill 3-4 models max. I almost never hit with the extra attacks either... Damn the dice!

Or how well your dice were tumbled when they filled in the pips with paint

Buddy of mine has a set of dice that we've unanimously banned from play because they have a '6 ratio' of over 50% Yes, for any given die over time it will roll 6 more than half the time. They are completely untampered dice, straight from chessex. The only thing wrong with them is that if you put them up against something that is known to be flat (like a tile) and look at a light, you can see spaces where the dice are worn unevenly from the tumbling. It just so happens that he managed to get a lot of 6 weighted dice :3

managed 72 wounds(in 1 assault phase) because a troop heavy guard player decided to charge quite a few squads and then over the next few rounds keep throwing more in the pile till the dice went hot,he was attempting to bring down the dread with superior numbers(not sure why he thought that was a good plan) now he just tries to drop them first round of the game.

When you are not used to the power of the talons...

I know I discovered how powerfull they are versus infantry the hard way... (forgot to ask their effect before assaulting )

Same problem my opponent had, he thought they were just dreadnaughts built for assault, he didn't realize how right he was till it was to late.
