Trying to wean myself off the manticore and use more LR's. First attempt to thow in planes now too:
HQ =
command squad with 5 men, no advisors, + power weapon, 1 melta, 1 plasma = 85 pts
Elites =
Psyker battlesquad + chimera with 4 additional psykers = 155 pts
Troops =
Vets with 3x plasma guns + chimera (Multi laser + HB) x2 = 340pts
Vets with 3x melta guns + chimera (Multi laser + HF) x2 = 310pts
Fast attack =
vendetta gun ship = 130 pts (command squad rides around in this)
Heavy support =
1x Hydra flack tank = 75 pts
1x Demolisher + las cannon + plasma sponsons = 220 pts
1x LR battle tank with heavy bolter sponsons + heavy stubber = 180 pts
1495/1500 points so far. Not sure where to dump 5 points.

What do you guys think of it? I have no specific opponents in mind. It's got alot of anti-MEQ, some stuff for hordes but I admit, not that much. I'm also not really using my orders all that well since everyone's in boxes and I don't really know I got enough anti-tank on the table either. If the demolisher goes down or the vendetta goes kaput, I'm stuck with very short range meltas.
Also, is having 1 vendetta going to be of any use? I'm not entirely sure what I can do with it other than tank hunting. Maybe have a vet squad in it and have the command squad in a chimera?
Any suggestions are welcomed.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm also wondering if I should toss out the company command squad since I barely have any orders that can be processed. And throw in a techpriest with retinue as the HQ choice.
Techpriest + 5 servitors (3 with arms) + MM + plasma cannon = 180 points (2+ to fix a tank)
Not sure where I'm gonna squeeze the extra 95 points out of though.. any suggestions?

My experience with these types of armies is they get completely obliterated or win every game.
I would switch the command squad for a tech priest squad. Not quite sure what I would get rid of though. I'm not a fan of psyker squad's, but that's a matter of opninion
I would probably try and get a bit more anti-tank, though what specifically I'm not sure.

lol good to know either I'll dominate or get tabled. I actually kind of like that "go big or go home " ness of this list though I thought it'd be decent all around anyway but does lack for long range anti-tank and the valk will be a total fire magnet.

I have a friend who plays veterans and vehicle heavy army who struggles to have any units alive at the end of game.
Iv'e got another friend with a veteran army, who's army wipes you of the table by turn 3
Your army seems to be a take the fight to the enemy, so I would switch the plasma gunning veterans with melta gunning veterans.

so 4 squads of meltas and zero plasma?
I might go 3 and 1 just to have some range option for the squad that's stuck sitting on an objective far from the fight.

In an imperial guard army, there is no such thing as to many troops, as alot of them will be killed due to low toughness. I wouldn't have the squad meant to sit on the objective with a chimera if it's meant to stay there the entire time though.

I'm actually trying out the psykers in this list seeing if they would be of any good. The latest metas seems to be a bunch of tanks on one end that everyone's familar with with alot of foot slogging necrons as the other side of the hard hitters. I've had just no luck shooting down whole squads of them so I wanted to see how effective weaken resolve would be to this whole operation. Thought I'd toss in ratlings too but didn't have the points for them either lol.

I would take out the weapons servitors and make the techpriest vehicle focused only, though I think a unit full of power fisting servitors would be good against necrons and tank armies. It would also make the squad cheaper

I think I agree with ya there. Their BS of 3 ain't that good anyway so it's probably a wash for 60 points. Still leaves me with something like 30 points to knock off. I can keep the army the same for the most part but I'll probably have to give up the demolisher's lascannon and maybe less plasma gun infantry... hrm... tough calls all around but I'll give it a go. Thanks!

well play tested this a few times. Did fairly well vs MEQ and crons / mech but this list has a very hard time vs hordes and MC. Definately not enough las cannons.
I'll probably be dumping the sponsons and heavy flamers for all the chimeras. Psyker battle squad was amazing. Cept shadows of the warp and runes of warding suck
The command squad also did naft nothing. should just dump the guys. Maybe a primaris psyker or something like techpriest HQ

That is because your CCS is poorly equiped to do anything.
2x plasma guns, LC, and Camo Cloaks, as well as being able to give itself 'Bring it Down!' for Twin Linked action means for 120pts, you can an effective HQ.
Or, for 145pts, you could give them all Melta guns and a Chimera and they are better than a melta Vet squad... besides the Scoring part.
Techpriest do not count toward the minimum HQ because they do not take up a force org slot. You would still need a real HQ.
You should never pack HBs on Chimeras unless they are camping a home objective, then the Vets inside should have a AC to boot.
Sponsons are terrible, specially on LRBTs in a Mech Guard list. Your going to stop so you can fire everything and let the Chimeras get infront of you were you could scatter into them? Lascannons on LRBTs are also a waste... if you want Lascannons, get a second Vendetta. At least their shots are Twin Linked and in a 3 shot volley.

actually if you check the latest IG FAQ (re-released last month 2012) they made it so techpriest are now full HQ choices. You can have yourself an adeptus mechanicus army now =)
pretty much agree with the other stuff you mentioned as well. Hey, everyone gotta learn it for themselves at one point or another right?

But I agree with almost everything, no HB on chimera and no side sponsons on LRBT just not worth it. But you are wrong blk tom if you want to take a tech priest as a manditory HQ you can with the new FAQ update. We all make mistakes.

When I run Mech guard I use 5 vet squads plus a penal legion. CCS is the firebase one described above, except I throw in a vox. One vet squad is the other part of the firebase: lascannon, 3 plasmas, and a vox. (Yes, some people hate the vox, but I find when you really want that order, you really want that order.) The other vets are two melta, two plasma, all in chimeras, with the penals in a Vendetta.
However, Mech guard can have real problems against a lot of armies, pretty much anything with a lot of anti-tank. BA, SW, or especially,other IG. I have switched to a hybrid list, and my platoon rarely lets me down.

Hehehe ya, I just had to learn it myself the hard way. (take people's advice but be prepared to check for yourself just to learn it better, or I'm just stubborn like that though gives me very good ideas on what to look for)
I've made an improved list with techpriests but still not that useful so far. Got tabled by tyranids and double spawning hormagaunts (spawned something like 80 guys over 4 turns, luck of the rolls I guess) and the "w/e it is long distance shooting guys with 2 wounds were hidhing well behind a big thingy with 2+ save (I'm so bad at tyranids>.<  slagged a bunch of tanks. (exploded so didnt get to fix)
Also while trying to down hormagaunts, my plasma men overheated 3 times out of 6, killing all of them in one go while the melta tank never got there since it immobilized on some trees and then exploded from shooting. Techpriest never got over there.
I realize now that I can shove the command squad with 2 meltas into the vendetta and just fly them into other things so may give that a try (and no more power weapon on the command squad, if I do take them, it'll be in the place of suicide melta stormtroopers essentially). The tech priest list so far has been played all wrong by me so I can't quite tell if it's fail or not.
I've really liked my psyker battle squad. It's done amazing things so far including (making 2 units of immortals run off the board or at least off an objective, 1 large blast template that rolled an AP1 and insta gibbed 6 blood angel assault marines, blew up a tank with str 8 template, and that's all in just the last 3 games) Failed every hood and shadow in the warp and runes of warding though and a perils only executed 2 guys so overall very proud of these guys.
Totally agree with sponsons. I now run Demolisher with just las cannon. The LR also just has las cannon
Plasma vets now have an extra las cannon in it and all the chimeras have heavy flamers.
I plan to get some more testing with both versions before I decide on trimming down some things for redundency.

How about a stationary vet squad or two. You could use the plasma guns you have there if you go for other highly mobile vets with meltas also. You could also give the stationary vets a lascannon, keep em in cover and now you have some gun line troops who can dish it out without having to move. Might be usefull to deny the enemy a section of the board while your
more mobile units mop up.
Your last post is why I run gunline guard. I can take a beating each turn and still have most of my army in tact.

yep, it's all about placement for the plasma vets.
with 3 plasma guns + las cannon at BS4 has been Very impressive. I've dumped 3 wounds on monstrous creatures very handidly a turn with that.
Mowed down mepheston in 2 turns last game with one of those guys
Rapid fire can dump some 7 AP2 shots on something in one turn.
Melta vets have definately proven their worth as well but I typically keep them kind of mobile so I have not put any cannons in there yet.
I also got to try the techpriest last night as a counter assaulting unit. Threw a 5 man squad against some 6 man Blood angel assault marines and they of course as can be guessed, got whiped out after 2 turns of combat. I just wanted to see how the servo arms would do and in the end, it didn't do well with ws 3 XD
Well, at least now I know for sure.
One other benefit from having a HW team in the squad I found out belately, was that You only take 9 rolls to wound when the tank blows up and it's alot easier to decide on what to dump the wound on after the tank explodes
As have been mentioned before, 2 hydras sound very enticing as does 2 vendettas but I'd pretty much have to give up a LR for it. Does it sound worth it?

If you only have one leman russ, it will be a huge target. I would personally do it.

Yes. For Mech Guard, you want two of everything, as redundancy is key. It is just simple fact that it is harder to kill two things than one thing (even if the Hydras are in a Squadron). If you need long range anti-tank, get a second Vendetta.
Actually I would look at droping a Melta Vet squad and having both of your LRBTs be the same variant.

so just 1 LR to encourage people to shoot at the AV 14?
then have 2 hydras and 2 vendettas?
I'm not convinenced at dropping any troops. They have been barely hanging in there in the past few games. I was thinking of expanding to 5 squads. Don't know how 3 would do.

Yeah, I guess you are pretty short on troops. Go two Hydras and two Vendettas. If you bump up to 1850, add two Demolishers then.
