Is there anywhere that sells really good skeleton models? I'm really not a fan of the GW one's (especially the price), and the Mantic Games ones aren't quite my favorite either. Could be because the picture doesn't give much detail on their site though.

Does anyone know of somewhere that sells good one's?

Hmm Wargames Factory is the only other plastic skeleton maker I know

Two problems with them though imo (I'm a so-so modeler though)

1. Terribly hard to put together (thin, small limbs, have to connect feet with legs, no ball/sockets at all with arms and to a lesser extent heads, separate weapons which while modular, can lead to some headaches)

2. They're greek themed straight out of the box, if you want medieval/something else, you'll need other parts


Other than that, you could go metal/resin

Reaper does but it will break your wallet

Honestly I think the VC skeletons are the best plastics on the market.

You have a good mix of armoured, clothed and naked torsoes and legs, all of which mix seamlessly with each other and don't look out of place when mixed, lots of different heads, sword and shield arms (you get more sword and shield arms with different designs than you get skeletons) and enough spears for all of them as well.

They're also realistically proportioned with the rest of the VC range to actually look like skeletons, not guys in skeleton costumes like other skeletons out there (especially the Mantic models).

I agree, the price is the killer. You need about 10 boxes to get your skeleton core (if you use fillers, if you don't you'll need more) if you're going heavy skeletons. They even completely lack VC related insignia, so they can be subbed in to Tomb Kings pretty easily.

There's not really many options for mass skeletons. You have places that do metals, like Reaper, which will come out being more expensive than even buying GW's VC skeletons. You have Wargames factory, which are really cheap (30 for $19.95us) but as mentioned above, need to build them completely from legs and arms to torsies, feet to legs, etc. This will be maddening for getting them to rank up, but good for making mini dioramas for fillers (something I'm planning on doing). And you have Mantics poop-from-a-butt skeletons.

Hmmm, maybe I'm better off not rolling with skeletons then. I LOVE the mantic ghouls and zombies.

Honestly skeletons are the worst of the three VC core right now IMO

They all have their strengths.

Ghouls are an expensive core unit that can actually hit back. It also cannot have a standard, so loses out in Blood and Glory.

Zombies are a tarpit (and actually a decent one now) that simply cannot fight back. It cannot have a champion to rescue a bunkered hero from a challenge. They do have a standard, however.

Skeletons are mid-ground. They're a tarpit, but not as good as zombies. They can hit back, but not as well as Ghouls. They have a Champion, so a bunkered hero has a bit more protection, and have a standard for Blood and Glory, and can even take a magic standard.

You're not going to want to roll with all skeletons, but not including a unit or skeletons at all if you want to bunker a backline character isn't the best idea.

Also, don't forget VC have 4 core now. Dire Wolves count to core again.

Do you really consider the Mantic skeletons to be that bad, Loki? I actually considered them to be decent. Good if you consider their price.

I've never stated I only like GW models. In fact, I'm often in threads for raging heroes, banebeasts, maxmini and other 3rd party companies singing their praises.

I don't like Mantics offerings - they don't appeal to me. Most of them are, to me, rubbish. Nothing wrong with me giving me opinion, especially when there's plenty of people giving their opinions. I dislike chapter house because, again, their stuff is terrible.

So, if you really want to keep following me around calling me a white knight trying to start something because I do like GW's products, keep it up. Mods are there for a reason.

edit - in response to those skeletons, a good paint job can make anything look good. In comparison to VC skeletons, they still look like people in skeleton costumes. Proportions are all wrong, particularly the heads and legs.

To be fair the GW skeletons are fine. I didn't really like the old ones,they where just as big as fleshy men,bigger even. At least these ones look like they fit inside a human body like skeletons do.

I think the GW skeletons are quite good. Might even rank best, but their price is still not justified... Especially when you're playing ~100 of them.

Mantic looks very into pumpkins... hhmm thats a little too cartoony for me. Id stick with gws for now.

Honestly, skellies are skellies. My skeletons include a mixture of Ral Partha, Grenadier, Heritage, RAFM, Mantic, several incarnations of GW and a few other obscure companies too. Of all the fantasy races produced by various manufacturers Skeletons seem to be the most compatible of them all. A consistent paint and base scheme will pull them all together very well. I tend to divide them into armored and unarmored, with sub groups of spears & pole arms / hand weapons.

Price I absolutely agree with. For exmaple, I'll be running two hordes of 50. If I bought locally, that would be $287au (I need 7 more boxes). For two cheap troops choices.

Someone else will be getting my money when I buy the rest of my skeletons. $125au is a bit more palateable.

There is nothing wrong with giving opinions, but when you tell OP to consider 2 brands that are really out dated and seriously bad sculpts , you act surprised to be
called out to be biased? Especially when you keep giving them names like rubbish and poop? There is opinion like you think they are bad, but to call them names just validates and shows you have additional
negative emotions towards them which could effect you opinion towards them, or perhaps not. Ya I realized long ago this is mainly GW related forum where its natural to be biased for them,
but really, they say if they walk like a duck , sound like a duck, its a duck.

Just like you, I too love GW products, thats why Im on this website. I certainly dont follow you around, I post alot in threads that asks for help finding alternate models,
and just the same you post alot bashing alternate models. Its inevitable we bump into each other. As I said, everyone is alittle biased when it comes to tolerating / condoning something
their favorite company does, it doesnt make you a white knght, even if it is, its only normal.

Thats the thing, most of Mantic stuff is awfully painted ( ok dipped ) for once you see them painted the same standard and they look OMG ~

When I said "aside" I meant it just as you did, assuming that is the primary judgement.
As in its pretty obvious Mantic's skeleton quality is good, comparable to current GW's , superior to Reaper and 200% better than Wargame factory.
Then we have aesthetic aside, well that is neither of us have any degree in proving our taste to be more accurate than each other, so Im not going to debate
something that is matter of personal opinion.
