Sergeant Major
In the dark recesses of your mind...
|
Hello all,
I'm really interested in some of the Khador figures I've seen and would like to maybe give the game a go. I'm mainly interested in the Winterguard models, and was wondering if it was possible to build a decent list out of them, without using any warjacks or some of the other models that don't fit the look of the winterguard. I'm not really a fan of the look of the warjack models or some of the heavily armored Khador models like the men o' war or the assault kommandos, so if possible, I'd like to stick with an army of all winterguard.
Any advice would be appreciated.

well warcasters come with jack points, so nomrally you can get a jack for free (a berserker) so you can run it just like that if you dont want to spend any points on warjacks.
massed winterguard can in fact be quite good. i would sggest it with some of our noted "troop" warcasters:
Either Irusk
'Epic Sorscha
Either Vlad
any of the above casters can handle tons of troops well, with special mention to prime irusk and epic sorscha.

Thanks for the advice studderingdave, I feel pretty good about going with an all winterguard army now, knowing that it won't get curb stomped into the ground on a regular basis.
I really like the Epic Sorscha figure, and probably will go with her.
I have another noob question, as I have only picked up the Forces of Khador book so far, and not the main rulebook. I see each caster has four tiers with different requirements and benefits. Does the tier I choose to model my army around have any consequences other than the restrictions and benefits? In organized play, are some tournaments limited to certain tiers?

Tier lists are entirely optional. You don't have to abide by them at all, but if you do you get the benefits listed. Keep in mind that you have to reach the goals of tier 1 to get to tier 2, and so on.
Keep in mind that if you play in a Steamroller tournament, you HAVE to spend your warcasters' warjack points.
Even if you just play normal games, not spending your warjack points means you'll always play 5-6 points down compared to your opponents. I'd recommend finding a faction where you actually like the looks of the warjacks instead, since they can do a lot of things nothing else in an army can.

Occasionally you get tier-only tournaments, but they're rare, from what I understand. Most people choose themes because of one of the following:
-they already have the pieces, and want benefits for taking them together, or they break regular FA restrictions (like Orsus')
-they want a challenge (a lot of them are considered sub-par (in effect, not design), Khador's got a few good ones, but also some really difficult ones (like the Old Witch's)
-they want acces to things they couldn't (for instance, Zerkova's alternate theme allows you to take a Vanguard (light merc jack) as a khador piece)
-they're starting new, and want some guidance (this is risky, as some lists reward less than brilliant choices)
In eSorscha's theme, there's a moderately strong argument for getting to Tier 2, as it's quite nice to be able to place your own terrain; it allows you to field those Winterguard you wanted to; and the terrain works well with her two favored jacks (Beast and a Kodiak are nicely efficient).
Downsides include not all the support you'd necessarily want, and not having kayazy assassins, who are khador's premier light infantry.

Thanks again for the advice guys. Maybe once I get a few models and have my head wrapped around the rules, I'll post some lists for discussion.

Sure.
Something I forgot to mention-- If you're going for a single warjack (minimum allowed), there are basically 3 options:
1- get the cheapest heavy you feel comfortable with (probably a juggernaut) and save all your points for infantry
2- get the nastiest single piece you can think of (beast 09 or the behemoth spring to mind, spriggan is a pretty good runner-up)
3- get the most efficient piece you can think of (kodiak, berserker (depending on the caster), beast (again... wonder why he's so popular?))

I think I'm going to start with a Kodiak. Since I'm planning on using Forward Kommander Sorscha, and her tier 1 list reduces the cost of the Kodiak by 1.

It's a great support jack and efficient, my one concern with using it as your only heavy is that it doesn't pack a really good punch, from my experience. If you're doing that, then be sure to include something else that can hit hard.

My first warmachine army was Khador and I used a tier 1 list with eSorcha. I think that is a great way to go. I started with a Kodiak and am not disappointed that I got it, but later I got Beast 09. He is by far so much better for her, he can kill more or he is a bigger target which allows the other units to do a better job.. The wintergaurd really shine with Sorcha with her desprerate pace and thier ability to reroll combined ranged attacks. I know you want to stay mostly wintergaurd units but I use manhunters and widowmakers and they have never falled me.

If your going for sorcha, and single jack, Beast 09 should be a given since they have affinity bonuses. And beast 09 is still my most feared jack to date.
That thing has bashed my legion models to a pulp so many times...
Though to be honest, If you don't like the Jack models for your army, I'd advise against actually getting that army. Jacks and beasts are to important in this game.
