Making a 1000 and 1500 list and planning on using a master necro as the lord choice but want something that can accept challenges and be killy or rack up some combat res on rank and file.

I have been toying around with the idea of a hero that has ASF, the HKB ability, and the sword that gives him +1 to hit. If he's in a challenge, he will almost always hit, leaving you with about a 1/6 chance of killing ANYTHING in the game. Against RnF he will also pretty much always hit (needing 1s twice) and wounding on 2s or 3s. IIRC, I had enough points for the 5++ ward and the Enchanted shield, as well.

With HA, that leaves him (or her) with a 3+/5++, HKB or 4 attacks, ASF @ I6, S5, and hitting everything on the game on no worse than a 3+.

Seems quite solid, but it racks in at 195ish points. If you're planning on squeezing in a necromancer or two, some sacrifice would have to be made...

I would never rely on killing blow as it can be ward saved, you have to give up all your other attacks and it is a 1/6 chance it even works.

It's solid vs a warsphinx or necro sphnix, since they are T8 anyways.

I would try giving him Aura of Dark Majesty, Beguile, Dread Knight, Sword of Swift Slaying, Enchanted Shield, Heavy Armor. Comes in at 189 points.

He's WS 8, and models attacking him must pass a leadership test at -4 or they re-roll hits, which at WS 3 is 5's. He also still has ASF and a 3+ armor save. The extra -1 makes it easier for units to fail Fear tests as well (particularly if you put him in a unit with the Screaming Banner), so they'll need to re-roll 6's to hit him. The drawback is he doesn't have a ward save, so he's better suited for mowing through RnF rather than going after characters, although he'd be a tough fight for most other Heroes.

Glittering scales could be cool for the -1 to hit in the above build also, you lose some armor but if they are needing 6's to hit you I would say it could make up for the lost saves, especially on great weapons.

I have had fun in the past with Flying, +1 to hit sword, Other Tricksters Shard

He can run around the table and assassinate characters pretty quickly for a relatively cheap cost. And does wonders in Storm of Magic to a mage on a Fulcrim.

The ASF sword and Glittering Scales are the same price, so you could easily swap them out. When you need to reroll 6's to hit, you almost don't need armor I've only had this guy actually have an unsaved wound get all the way through once.

Don't forget the pretty little Aura of Dark Majesty + Fear Incarnate + Screaming Banner combo (either in the unit or as BSB).
Though it's pretty obvious, it's actually a decent Hero Vamp build.

Indeed, dirt cheap too, at 150 total before other toys.

No it is not. First you have to hit with your ONE attack and then roll a six with that ONE attack. Thanks but no thanks. If you want to kill a sphinx Konrad is your man. Honestly if you just want someone who can slap down a character or a multiwound model Konrad is your man

If you got a sphinx problem grab a relic blade or GW. 5 pts for a relic blade, wound on 5+ and you dont have to give up all your attacks or strike last.

If you want to kill a sphinx, throw a 60 point wraith at it, and chill touch. Same way to kill a hydra, or steam tank, or any other monster.

Matt hit the nail on the head. Wraiths own any big single thing with no magic attacks

I would run a vamp with aura of dark majesty, beguile, dreadknight, and glittering scales just to troll other combat builds. Everyone is hitting on 5s and most likely rerolling successful hits, its just hilarious but only in challenges
