Hey,

It's my first tournament ever to be taken seriously and i need a 500 point Guard list. this is what i was thinking along the lines of:

HQ

CCS w/ Autocannon - 60

Veteran squad w/ 3 flamers - 75

Veteran squad w/ 2 meltas, flamer - 95

Medusa - 135

Medusa - 135
_____
500

How does that sound, feel free to post you 500 point guard list, i'll take anything into account providing it has a good reason C&C appreciated!

Flamers are not the best option on Vets, as they have a BS4, and flame templates auto hit. Meltas are good as are plasma.

I feel the medusas might not be the best option, your vets will be trying to get close and scattering can hit your own guys.

I would also fill up the CCS with all special weapons you can take, the autocannon is good, but youll have two guys just standing there.

Why not drop the medusas, load up the Vets and CCS in chimeras and bring something without scatterability, like a pair of hydras? Just a thought. And good luck

I do agree about hydras being devastating at low points games. For 15 points more than 1 medusa you get 8 TL strength 7 shots with a 72" range. Its tough to beat. Here's the mech vet list I run at 500 points. It's got heavy flamers to deal with hordes, and enough plasma to deal with anyone who takes a deathstar unit of terminators. Theres also melta for any heavy armor you run into

HQ
CCS - 4xplasma guns, chimera w. ML/HF
(175)

Troops
Veteran Squad - 3xplasma, chimera w. ML/HF
(170)
Veteran Squad - 3xmelta, chimera w. ML/HF
(155)

Total - 490pts

You've got 10pts left over to add a dozerblade or something to one of the tanks.

Just my 2 cents

What about something like this?

Techpriest - 45

PCS - 30

2x Infantry squads w/ melta - 110

Special weapons squad w/ 3 Demo charges, 3 flamers, chimera - 165

Hydra - 75

Hydra - 75

Or:

mindstorm priest - 45

PCS w/ 2 meltas - 50

2x Infantry squads w/ 2 meltas, - 120

Chenkov - 50

40 Conscripts w/ SINTW - 235

what'd you think?

This is definitely a solid list. I'm convinced however that shaving enough points to grab a scout sentinel with an auto cannon makes the list slightly better. That extra vehicle body, and you can outlfank it if you need to.

This is the 500 point guard list that I like a lot. The varient I run is slightly less optimized to use units that I like, but the idea is the same. This is an all foot list, focused on bringing a lot of bodies and a lot of guns. I found that I was able to beat the above list pretty solidly. The advantage I had was that a shaken result on a vehicle stops it from shooting, but you can't stop infantry from shooting unless you chew through all of their ablative wounds.

(110) ccs- las cannon, sniper rifle, standard, cameo cloaks
(55) pcs- auto cannon, 2 grenade launcher
(125) infantry squad- commissar, 2 power weapons, flamer, auto cannon, melta bombs
(125) infantry squad- power weapon, flamer, auto cannon, melta bombs
(135) vet squad- las cannon, 3 plasma guns

The Company Command Squad's primary purpose is issuing orders and boosting moral. If you play by the inat FAQ the Regimental Standard also helps with summary execution (the ruling there is that you get to re roll your leadership check and only have to execute if you fail 2 times! but you still cant roll a third). Past versions of this without the Standard were too vulnerable to breaking- people would just ignore the blob, and shoot everything else. Once the blob is alone its easier to deal with. Cameo Cloaks are there to make the squad a better bullet sponge, since they are the center of the list they will attract unwarrented attention. Sniper is just filler to shoot at MCs.

PCS is acts as another fire support unit, while the blob is your bread and butter unit. You can count on them to do just about anything. They are tough to kill, give heavy weapon support, and can benefit from move move move to get to objectives- and they can often survive the treck. With leadership 9 from the commissar they are also more likely to receive orders.

The vets take advantage of their good ballistic skill and large number of special weapon slots to bring plasma to the enemy.

The two las cannons are taken to deal with things like Quantom Shielding which Auto cannons cannot penetrate. Las cannons go on bs4 platforms while auto cannons go on bs3 platforms. Basic Strategy is to cripple your enemy with heavy weapon fire then march the blob over to finish the job. As long as your leadership can hold out you can out shoot most opposing armies, and your blob is surprisingly capable in assault.

To me it looks like both the posted lists are illegal as the HQ units don't take up a slot. I may be wrong but I know in the old codex it was played as though they didn't count towards min/max HQ requirements. That said, neither list looks very effective. The first list has a troops choice that will do little/nothing and the special weapon squad is illegal as it can only have 3 special weapons. It also can't take a chimera. 2 hydras at 500 points is a little overkill IMO. One is definitely worth it though. List 2 is much the same thing, except this time theres one bloated troops choice thats not going to do anything. Having a giant unit of conscripts is cool, but it does nothing in game especially with Ld 5. If you want a competitive foot list @ 500 points, you need to run powerblobs. Essentially its a CC geared infantry platoon blobbed together around a commissar to give them staying power. Something like

PCS - 4xflamers
(50)
IS - meltagun, commissar w. power sword, sergeant w. meltabombs & power sword
(120)
IS - meltagun, sergeant w. power sword & meltabombs
(75)

Both the squads are grouped together meaning you now have a very prickly 21 man unit, thats stubborn with Ld 9. They've got melta's to deal with any vehicles, and walkers will think twice about charging them because they have meltabombs. I usually run the PCS with 4 flamers as a counter assault unit, or to support the blob when it charges.

Here's a sample list using this unit

HQ
CCS - 2xgrenade launchers, autocannon
(70)

Troops
PCS - 4xflamers
(50)
IS - meltagun, commissar w. power sword, sergeant w. meltabombs & power sword
(120)
IS - meltagun, sergeant w. power sword & meltabombs
(75)
Veteran Squad - 2xplasma, autocannon
(110)

Heavy Support
Hydra
(75)

Total 500pts

You've got all the bases covered with this I would think. The vets, CCS, and hydra provide a firebase, while you have an assault unit to take the fight to the enemy

Damn, missed the reply again

Just my 2 cents

Ok, if the SW teams can't take a tranasport their still legal - it says 3 guardsmen HAVE to take one of the following, nothing saying the other three can't take one, as for the HQ it says it dosen't fill up one of your HQ slots but as like the emperors champion with the black templars it still fulfils the HQ requirements.

I like your list Ork boy but i think it has very little Ummphh to it - the 2 hydras creates that Ummphh for me since that is for 150 points 8 TL S7 AP 4 shots firing a turn.

To which list would you be referring, the mech vet list or the foot list?

Foot, it's all 'regular' things to take and thats what a lot of people build their armies to match/beat as part of it
