What armies seem to have the best game balance between them, or just the most fun. For me its space marines vs orcs. Just seems like I always have the best games vs orkies. Win or loose. Seems like they were made to fight each other.

Yeah, I love the idea of that match up, but I win vs them too easily. Maybe its just the players I've played against.

Imperial Guard VS. Tyranids and Imperial Guard VS. Tau

Former is intoxicatingly similar to starship troopers

Whereas the latter is undeniably Halo-esque, with the Tau filling the role of the galactically imperialistic mixed-race Covenant.

Eldar vs. Dark Eldar. I had a great game the other day, came down to my SS Exarch (the last model left in my army) killing five FNP and Fearless Kabalite warriors (the last models in his army) over 4 rounds of combat. Thank goodness for the +1 S bonus from his chainsword!

Tau vs Tau

This is probably the most "realistic" matchup possible in 40k.

Why do you think tau vs tau is the most realistic?

Because in the far future, wars won't be fought by guys with axes and swords. They'll shoot at each other from a large distance and "close combat" will mean you can actually see your opponent and you're not just firing over the horizon.

So there won't be power armor in the far future? Or your saying even if there is, they will shoot mainly anyway?

There certainly will be much more advanced armor in the far future. However, the way to beat that armor is going to be using high tech projectiles. It won't be hitting them in the head with an axe, or the butt of your rifle.

Edit: Don't get me wrong. I have no issue at all with the silliness that is warfare in 40k. It's fun and entertaining. But, it's just not realistic. (Not that 40k ever tries to be realistic )

Well, if some kind of armor that is impervious to anything but a huge axe is invented, then you may be very wrong.

That said, Guard vs. Ork is always entertaining to see. Horde vs. Horde is always great.

Of course, you would be a very sad person if you played 40k for realism.

"And another thing, Tyranids. Aliens aren't real! Why would they have them in the game? Same goes for Chaos. I mean, its not like anyone has even seen a Daemon or anything. The whole game is ridiculous! I'm going to send a letter to Gamesworkshop about this!"

On topic, my favorite match up is Chaos Space Marines vs. Imperial Guard. It just seems fluffy.

I'm actually going to change mine to Black Templars vs Tau. Just the reactions you get when you tell some one that when you shoot them they get closer to you

I think many agree orcs are just fun to fight against. Thank you orc players for playing an army that is fun to play against.

Well, if I play mech Eldar, Lanchester's square law comes to bear (as always), but with the number of heavy weapons the enemy can bring to bear one can measure it quite nicely. My favorite match up = the law shifts into my direction.

They're basically the Chaos equivalent of Imperial Guard.

I've played IG vs. IG games and had a blast. It was like playing a WW2 game, and lots of fun if the lists are both reasonably balanced. I played one really artillery heavy army that was on the defensive with my balanced list, and another against an all mechvet army that was like playing against Panzergrenadiers in CoH.

Imperials vs. Chaos is too much fun thematically for me. Any variant of Marines or Guard against CSM/LatD is fantastic. I don't enjoy playing against daemons as an army though, but a big monster or horde of daemonic gribblies in a Chaos army can be fun too.

I also enjoy any sort of game where the armies are very different, like a melee horde against shooting elites or what have you.

I always enjoy my games against IG since each list that I come across is different from the other, and it's nice to see a hybrid of foot and tanks rather than full on parking lots.
