You don't see a lot of chatter on these, so I have one a try today.

The plan was simple.
Vampire, heavy armor, charmed shield, and opal amulet. (that's ignore 1 hit, and 4+ ward vs 1st wound). Still pretty cheap.
Kept the Throne within 12" of the general, so I get the LD10 for battle of the wills. In most combats, the generals unit moves in within 6" pretty fast, where my generals Aura of Dark Majesty pays off.

It performed a lot better than I thought it would. Varghulf, vargheists and hex wraiths all loaded one flank while smaller ghoul units and sand makes them similar.
It's done a pretty good number on shooting armies, as you have a chance that you'll make those shooters hit each other instead of listening to you.

Remember that the Charmed Shield and Opal amulet only apply to the Vampire. Hits allocated to the Throne won't benifit from those Items(and the Vampire won't get the Ward Save from the Throne)

I think the throne is brilliant for a hero but the pricetag kills it for a rare

Though something I noticed is since you can increase a BSB's range maybe a vamp BSB on throne may be worth it.

I can only afford one such model and want the Mortis Engine instead. I hear its better and I think it looks better. besides because the models are so 'unique' having both will not look as good as having one.

Perhaps if I am not alone in my thinking it would explain the lack of Coven Thrones around here and elsewhere.

It is possible to build the model as both. No modification to the parts are necessary other than pinning/magnetizing. First, you just build up the core of the kit according to the instructions until you get to the point that you must choose which final model you want to make (I would suggest not attaching the platform to the spirit host yet though, both for ease of assembly and painting). Then what you need to do is to place magnets in key places on the main platform and then "pin" most of the components that attach to it with paperclips (cut flush with the component instead of poking out like a normal pin). The front three sides of the Reliquary cage need not be magnetized as they will snap into place against the cage back and arm-rails if you assemble them as a single component. You can also easily permanently attach the front Banshee to this part. The only parts I decided not to add to the finished kit were the other two Banshee models. They would have made the process a bit more difficult, and I wanted to use them as Banshee Heroes anyway.

To get even more bang for your buck out of this kit, you can construct a base for the Necrarch (easy enough to build steps) and convert some horses such that the Vampire coven models can ride them side-saddle (this part might be difficult, I have not yet tried it myself).

The key to all of this of course is the paint scheme. You'll have to come up with something that you feel is appropriate and will work with both configurations.

That is a really solid list.

You've got all the speed you need, and the level 4 can bunker up the zombies and keep the ghouls in the fight.
