How much liberty does the player have regarding weapon-placement on vehicles?

I ask because this question sparked when I saw a player at my FLGS glue his flamers on the rear doors of his Land Raider, only to get berated that they should be placed on the forward doors for maximum target acquisition. This made me curious as to where else could I put weapons to enhance my usage of them? Could I mount Leman Russ sponsons on the front to get a massive frontal arc of fire, sacrificing side-range. Could I put my sentinel autocannon on top of the armored carriage as to achieve 360 degrees firing arc?

My real question is related to the valkyrie. I really want to put my multilaser on the loading ramp manned like an exit-door gun on a Halo Pelican, and I want to reverse my MRP's so I can fire behind me after I drop suckaz off.

At what point have I broken the rules regarding weapon placement? Or have I at all?

There can be a little leeway with weapon placement on vehicles, it usually depends on how the weapon is considered mounted.

Sponsons are inherently mounted on the sides of vehicles, but with the land raider example there are 2 points you can mount it on on each side and where you mount it is up to you. Razorbacks also have this because the piece that the turrent mounts on can be rotated to put the turret a little more forward than is normall shown.

Sentinels and Valkyries typically have their weapons hull mounted, this means they may only fire in the front 45 degrees of the vehicle. Unfortunately this means you may not put the Sentinels autocannon on the top for a better firing angle (Sentinels are Walkers though, can't they rotate during the shooting phase like Infantry?) and you also cannot put the valkyrie's multilaser mounted on the back instead of the front.
