Subject: Cthulu? It is closer than you think. NEWS
A group of Russian scientists plumbing the frozen Antarctic in search of a lake buried in ice for tens of millions of years have failed to respond to increasingly anxious U.S. colleagues -- and as the days creep by, the fate of the team remains unknown.
"No word from the ice for 5 days," Dr. John Priscu professor of Ecology at Montana State University, told FoxNews.com via email.
The team from Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) have been drilling for weeks in an effort to reach isolated Lake Vostok, a vast, dark body of water hidden 13,000 ft. below the ice sheet's surface. The lake hasn't been exposed to air in more than 20 million years.
Are you prepared?

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

I have to admit.
The end of "The DunWich horror" made my jaw drop.
In my experience only a few of the HP Lovecraft stories actually include any sort of horror. The Music of Erich Zann is probably my favorite, as it actually includes a "horror" aspect, as opposed to "it's alien, and it kinda looks like a frog" that perpetuates most HPL fiction.

"The Beast in the Cave" is a pretty good "horror" story as well.
Crossbreeding with the Deep Ones is a major point in several story lines (mainly anything that takes place near Innsmouth), but I wouldn't say that it perpetuates most of his work at all.

On a lighter note, I agree with Coolyo. It just had to be the Russians.
No "mom". I will NOT stop having fun.
Now stop being such a buzz kill. I still have balloons and streamers to hang before the Dark One rises.

He's supposed to be "sleeping" at the bottom of the ocean, somewhere.
Frozen, Trapped under ice, is also possible.

Also, how does a lake avoid being frozen for 20 million years? Something about pressure? 13000 feet is almost three miles!
I think it has to do with the insane pressure from the ice above and geothermal heat from below. Apparently there are a number of these sorts of lakes scattered through the antarctic. Evolution wise it's pretty interesting, but the act of drilling into it and exposing it to air/other stuff after 20 million years has a good chance of ruining any ecosystem down there. Which is I think why the Americans are hesitant about it.
