Hi there everyone! Hope you all are doing great and crushing your enemies!
I have a question here that a friend of mine, who has just started playing fantasy orks, been having problems with. He wants to know are you allowed to make ork skins different colors? I know some people make them red or blue (I prefer the different types shades of green).
His idea is to make them grey, and make stripes of gold and silver on them, like they are stone orks with traces of gold and silver in them, is that allowed or is it taboo?
Thank you all in advance for helping me out once again!!!

Allowed? Yes.
Common? No.
I wouldn't expect to win any painting awards with them, or get complements from hard core fluff ***** but that shouldn't stop you. For friendly games whatever friends agree on is fair.
Personally, I'd never paint green-skins anything but green. But I get flack for my Blue Lantern Tau symbol, and my Auxiliary heavy list, so who am I to judge.

What if he made them green skin, with gold or silver warpaint? He likes his metallic paints, another scheme he had an idea of was making the skin camo patterned, like green, khaki, black and brown and together in blotches, but I think that's more 40k than Fantasy.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Like I said it's not against the rules, but you won't be winning paint comps with them. Some of those are EPIC some are EPIC FAIL, and it's not thier diviation from the norm but the skill with which they were applied that marks them as such. That being said, nothing like that has ever places in a Golden Demon, and if that's what you want, I'd stick to green. But if what you want is some ROCKIN' stone orks *rim-shot* by all means do it, and do it WELL.

there were some pics around here of some really nice white orks and also some red ones. in one of the gotrek and felix books there's some orcs who have been posessed by some kind of old-one daemon and have jet black eyes and really, almost white, skin.

Your stuff is AWESOME, but off topic. We're looking at Non-standard paint schemes, not "OMG WTF, how in the... but those are... ok, that's both awesome and disturbing at once" conversions that don't acutally use any GW models.

Well WHFB lore supports orcs with much darker skin (bordering on black) due to chaos dwarf breeding and such. Also for goblins you could just blame the mushrooms

Ive seen pink, grey and blue orcs... All worked, afterall fungus / mushrooms can come in many different colours? Can't they?
For mine i stuck with green and just added blue tatoos to add variation.

Thank you all for the speedy replies and all the help, that's why Dakka Dakka is my fav forum.
So basically it comes down to this, if he wants to contend in the Golden Demon, non-green greenskins area a no-no, otherwise everything goes?
I also read Gotrek and Felix DPBellathrom, and I remember those white orks, does that mean they are a legit color, since it is a Warhammer book?
I was staring at the screen like a moron for 10 minutes at those My Little Pony marines, so wrong yet so intriguing. . .

It's because he's actually BUILDING Mare-ines. He's using an very odd starting point, but by adding armor, sculpting hair, repainting everything, he's not just phoning it in but making legit art. And it's cool. What I really loved was the shot of the two finished next to the two WIP, the alterations become so much more visible and impressive there.
Figure out what you want to do then get a cool backstory. Even the weakest paint set takes on deeper meaning when it's got a solid fluff. Take your initial scheme. Just saying grey with gold or silver stripes and I was thinking "Gee, that sounds like the Ogre scheme my buddy uses" then I saw stone orcs, and I thought "cool." Now if you expand that, why are they stone, who created them, how do they breed, what are they doing, you're not painting them wrong, you're telling a story.
A presentation board helps here too. Stone orks on a table may be cool. Stone orks arrayed across a cliff face fighting dwarves as they come out of caves looks even cooler. Sure this is a ton of work, and a chunk of change, but if you want people to drool over your minis, this would help.
And if all you want is to have fun, do whatever!

I like the way you think Bounty, the reason I liked his stone orks idea was, just think of all the detailing he can do, cracks in the stone, moss growing on them, though I think he might have to remove the gold and silver veins idea, the orks would be extinct in a matter of days if Dwarfs discovered they could be mined! Although on the other hand that could be some interesting fluff, I like writing fluff, so I could help my friend with that.
We aren't pro painters, so the Golden Demon isn't anything we should be worried about soon!
The Mare-ines (just love the name) is the most amazing thing I've seen in a while, and I browse odd models all day.
