I want to repaint some Ork miniatures I have but the problem is I have painted some of them with very heavy layers of paint (they were some of my first) and if I paint them over I will lose all of the detail. So does anyone know how to remove citadel paint from a model cheaply and easily? Or am I just going top have to scrape it of?

Castrol Superclean, Simple Green, or Totally Awesome (yes it's a product) will all strip the paint off if soaked long enough.

get a glass jar or storage container big enough for your models lay the models in it,. Fill the container up above the models and leave it sitting overnight.

Wear gloves and use an old toothbrush to clean off the melted paint.

Nope. I've left models in all three for weeks and had no issues. Avoid Pinesol as it will melt plastics eventually.

Nah, dollar bills...

Ive have success with rubbing alcohol. 91% Isoployic or whatever the spelling is. Soak for an hour, and the paint just fell off. Now its not reuseable since the alcohol evaporates, so thats a downer.

Only works if they call them models.

Depends on the material you're stripping. Acetone does it fast, but you want a mask and no plastic involved. Dettol works decently with both, I've timed it and it took approximately 4 days before the Space Marine I tested it on started to show signs of deterioration. Gets it done over night usually.

For oil based paints you're after stuff like turpentine, however if it is a plastic model forget it as whatever will break down the paint will break down the model. Additionally when using the stronger stuff to strip a metal model remove the base first. Most of the ways will still require you to scrub off the remainders with an old toothbrush and need to soak to take effect.

I've been using Dettol - I got 2 large bottles for a pound and a 'smokers toothbrush' (harder bristles) from the local poundstore.

Drop the models in a jar, pour in dettol till it covers the models fully, put lid on jar. Leave overnight - next day fish the models out and scrub with the toothbrush under a tap.

Might take 2-3 or more tries depending on just how much paint is there though, but it's safe for plastics.

Sadly, we can't get any of that here :(

I was just about to say that, also thanks for the link!

The stuff I use on this side of the pond is called Purple Power, and it's an industrial degreaser. While you probably can't get it there, I'm begining to suspect from the weekly "how do I strip plastic" threads that the key is "Industrial Strength Degreaser." So I'd look for that. Also, if any of the Queen's men can verify if Dettol and Fairy Power Spray are Degreasers, it'd be greatly appriciated. And if anyone knows what the Austrailians are using, I'd like to check that as well.

Back to the bad humor: I use acetone, either the clothes come off, or they get THE DIP!

personally? I was using break fluid for the longest time....but it's so expensive...so I went to my local home depot and picked up a jug of industrial purple...it's a degreaser and it eats paint like no tomorrow! and it's only 14 bucks for a 4 liter jug....for tons o stripping

Brake fluid is expensive?

It's cheaper than SG at my local auto store (SG I have to get from the large hardware chain several suburbs away).

It also works better on metals than SG does and doesn't seem to hurt the plastics either (dot3) - but I don't leave them in it for longer than 10 minutes.

The downside to Brake Fluid is it's a neurotoxin and a hazardous material. So make sure you are not pouring that crap down the drain. It has to go to a hazardous material disposal site.

Indeed, hence the obligatory warning in my sig.

Hell, WATER and OXYGEN are toxic in the wrong circumstances.
