Subject: Why do you play Warhammer 40,000?

I am an infantry marine, ive been deployed three times to afghan and iraq and every time i come home it goes the same way each time... eat the most gargantuan freaking bacon cheeseburger i can find, i fire up my motocross bike and almost kill myself, and then i jump headfirst back into the world of Warhammer 40,000. im talking books, codexes, starting 4 new armies at once, painting 5-6 hours a day, throwing herietical dice accross the room, and getting crushed by the local gaming club experts. Except for one time, my Ultramarines crushed an Imperial Guard leafblower... i was literally covered in sweat and exhausted at the end of that 7 turn slugfest, totally ridiculous.
so i play warhammer because its in the blood, its what my imagination feeds off of, its a world that always manages to put me back in that happy place and its something ive been addicted to for over 17 years and i keep coming back no matter what.
why do you?

It combines my adolescent love of action figures with a chance to work with my hands (which runs in my family) and a narrative that does a good job of feeding my imagination. Close games of Warhammer 40k are a blast to play, to boot. I'm sure that I could get a similar fix from another tabletop game, but 40k offers all of these things along with the largest miniatures gaming community in the world. I might struggle to find an Infinity or Flames of War game, but as long as I can locate a gaming store, I'm almost certain to find a group with which to play 40k.

I play miniature games because I work with computers all day. I like having something to do in the evenings that doesn't involve a screen, as well as the face-to-face game time with friends.

I find when i play that my armies normally intimidate even veteran players as orks are bit rare in my LGS. It's great to make conversions or have pieces that honestly draw the eye more than the endless number of marine chapters or IG, Not to say they aren't painted well or constructed well but i think most people's reaction with these armies is to innately ignore them less requested while orks are normally the other way around. I love playing with my friends, treating it as a hobby and talking over fluff and playing the RPG's to me ... i suppose it's to have activities outside normal "sports talk" and have good laughs while imagining funnying situations like Fire Dragons getting assualted by Killa Kans and their melta bombs proving useless against mechanized cowards.
In short, Cause i find it really fun and worth the steep initial investment in the long run.

I started playing it because it combined aspects of what I was reading at the time and as a kid (Asimov's Foundation, Dune, Judge Dredd, Harry Harrison's Deathworld series, etc).
As time passed, I still played it because unlike other games that I also got into, you could at least get a game of it anywhere and it was always going to be the same (it's the mcdonalds of gaming).
Hence why after 24 and a bit years, I am resting it and playing Infinity instead.
