hey there

What have you learned from dakka? What have you archieved with its help, and what have you contributed that you are proud of?

I have learne A LOT of painting related things, and my skill has greatly improved thanks to this site. Same with my in game tactics and list building.

I've also recieved quite some feedback on my models, wich I am very grateful for.

My biggest (or most useful) contribution was this thead, wich is a collection of painting and modelling advie. Many people have shared their secret tricks, and you can learn a lot from this thread:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/416755.page

And in addition, I have improved my english by posting so much on this board.

Oh, and I'll propably get some comission work through dakka

How about you?

LOOK!! a shameless self-promotion! (gasp!)

That my painting is too mediocre to get any responses about .

Nah, seriously, it's more the rumours and maybe some grey area clear area clear up. Ideas knocked back and forth in the P&M section is also a perk of reading the forums. Also a lot of entertainment, the flaming wars and name calling and GW bashing gives me a chuckle on a regular basis.

Dakka has helped me confirm what was previously a mere suspicion - that is, that it's a hell of a lot easier to muse about something than to do it, so I'm destined to spend years establishing a near-encyclopedic knowledge of things I rarely, if ever, try and put to use.

I've come across some great ideas and solid advice, here, but after those eye-opening first few months of trawling the P&M board, nothing has really improved my work (be it painting, sculpting, or scratchbuilding) more than spending the same amount of time at the workbench, instead of the computer, would have.

What Dakka really does for me is keep me involved in the hobby (ignore the mostly facetious negative spin of my previous comments), even when I'm not working. Considering the way I generally am with motivation and energy levels, that's the vast majority of the time. Providing feedback on models, spitballing about projects, and sharing the tips and tricks that I've gleaned from others are as much a part of my hobby as actually assembling and painting miniatures or playing games.

To avoid a full-on ramble, I'll answer the questions in the OP more directly: I've learned tons, achieved little, and shared lots.

Dakka is the only internet community that I force myself to be a part of. Since I am largely technophobic, it helps me to deal with my irrational hatred of the thinky-box. It also has helped me to learn to let stupid people say stupid things without responding. (I'm still working on that second part.)

If I had to be proud of anything, it would be the 'Why Are We Fighting?' thread I posted. I know it isn't great or anything, but I like it.

I started collecting and playing 40k a little over a year ago and Dakka was the site that really caught my interest in the beginning.
This site, particularly the forums, have more or less taught me everything I know about 40k.

Also posts in the Comics thread inspired me to give DCNU a chance, which I have been loving so far.

In general just enjoy the site, and getting involved in threads regarding things that interest me. Looking at what other folks are working on, and hanging around.

Oh and other than that I have my Girls of sci-fi and Fantasy art thread in DCM which I put a fair few pics into every week.

Mostly I find being on here fun really.

Doubt that I have contributed anything worthwhile. I guess my painting skills have gone up a bit, and also got into airbrushing based on some of the stuff i saw/read on here, so basicly Dakka cost me a lot of money :p

Painting has gotten better, I've become a bit more accustomed to the 40k universe, gotten much better at writing lists, gotten a fair few 's over my lengthy and contradictory writing, and in general been mildly contributive/annoying. Met quite a few cool people, learned to use the Ignore function, learned that I'm really not up to being a big OT person anymore (Used to go exclusively to the OT section on other forums). I think the biggest thing I've gotten out of dakka was the bits and pieces of commission work (of which I found that I don't enjoy painting enough to do it 24/7 but that I love organizing data, checking things off of checklists and getting packages), and learning how to use the post office.

i've learned a lot about different rule interpretations and how I was usually doing it wrong! I've learned that there are a lot of better painters than me, but also that I am harsher on my own painting than I should be.

Oh yeah, and also, that everyone loves Ultramarines as much as I do!

Well...if we say that my love for Ultramarines is the special kind of love that's really more like extreme disinterest, sure.

I believe he was commenting on your typo...write vs writhe. I don't recommend writhing as a lifestyle choice, but whatever floats your boat.

And now for a serious answer...the things I have learned...well...I hopped on here when I was really new, so it has definitely helped with my comprehension of the rules and universe of 40k. Also, the people who peruse the WM section of Dakka are pretty helpful

What I have contributed: I have commented on quite a few people's army lists for both 40k and Fantasy. I have occasionally been wrong or given bad advice, but I like to think I've been helpful to people hopping into one of the armies I play...

My writing has improved so much from dakkadakka that my teachers at my old school are using examples of my old work and showing my new papers. Giving a children a good reason not to listen to their grade school teachers. because they are liars.(Only our school though >.> )

I have learned so many techniques, So many awesome discussions. I remember someone posted a parkour video and thats what got me into parkour. Or that was somewhere else.
I can't remember. But this is where i retreat when i don't want to deal with facebook for its 'dramatic' teenagers that have facebook fights and then I have to go all moderator and censor them all.

When I first came to the board, (about July 2011 me thinks) my ork army list was sorta, well, baaaaaad. But with the help of a lot of posters (excluding the people that just posted "Bad" and didn't say why or "This is horrible" and said nothing else) My orks have not bin kicking arse across the galaxy, winning most of my games as well (CEPT AGAINST my twins bloody SW's, DAMN YOU LOGANWING!)

I'm also quite happy with the way I helped Dakka, with my Ork and Dwarf Tactics, and general help on those armies. And with my post about the gaming board I made
