Hey guys,
I have been broadcasting a series of Airbrush 101 videos via RHQ-TV the last few months. There are 6 videos in the series at the moment with a new one coming out each week.
This is a link to the playlist on the RHQ-TV YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL623FBC860C1108AE&feature=plcp

Andrew

Yes I do talk about the setup, what you need to get and basic hardware you will need. I can also answer any questions if you have them.

Well i kinda got an question.
I use the water based vallejo model air colors and i really got a problem with paint sticking to the needle and messing up my.. erm... what is called?
Well instead of making a nice straight line it now makes that line with lots of little spots 'spittet' aound it.
Not that much of a problem with normal use, but a soon as i start making detail work or start making flames on my dark eldar ships it really gets annoying.
After cleaning the needle and nozzle it all gets back to normal. Untill it starts sticking again.
I Use an Harder&Steenback infinity 2 in 1 and got the same problem with both of my needles/nozzle (one 1.5mm and one 4mm set). And no, nothing is damaged or bended.
Should i use different paint? non water based? or is it an airbrush problem and should invest in an chrome brush?
And second question. I see you using your brush really really close to the model. How do you prevent the paint from running effektivly.
I got my tricks like using low pressure and not making the paint to thin but its all not optimal, exspecially while using the 1.5 mm needle.
Thx in advance
JEM

Nice how to vids.... I know what I'll be watching this weekend.
I've done a lot of airbrushing on cars in the past but I must say that airbrushing mini's a alot different.
I've got a few Rhino's I'd like to weather and I think the airbrush helps...
Keep up the good work RHQ !!!!!

It sounds like your paint could be a little on the thin side OR your air pressure is a little too high, although it is hard to know without actually seeing what you are talking about. I run my compressor at just over 20 Psi and keep my paints relative thin. I also use the needle (paint flow) adjustor so that only a small amount of paint comes out (the needle adjustor stops how far back you and pull the trigger on the airbrush.
Perhaps try a lower PSI as when it is too high it can sometimes cause splattering with thin paints (such as Vallejo Model Air).

The trick for me to airbrush so close to the model is to have the needle adjustor set so that only a small amount of paint can come out (it effective stops the trigger coming back to far). I spent a lot of time getting the PSI (around 20) and the needle adjustor right so that the Vallejo Model Air paints spray nice and even without splattering or running.
Hope that helps.

You may want to add some windex to the mixture or some thinner. I have heard that a lot of people water their vj air color down.

Yeah I have used Windex and Thinning agents before, especially with the Vallejo Model Color and Game Color range (as well as other manufacturer's ranges) however I have never had to do it with Model Air as they are so thin out of the bottle.
If you could take some pics and post them it might help solve the problem!

Andrew

I have recently started airbrushing and saw some of these issues at first while practicing.
For spattering, I found it seemed to occur with my white more than anything else. The paint was already quite thin so I moved closer to the model, and upped the pressure a bit helped quite a bit.
If you are experiencing pooling, move the brush around a bit more or use less paint on that area and come back to it. Keeping the air flowing towards one spot dries out extra paint quickly as well but dont get too close or you will see the spider effect. Another issue I have seen with others while I was researching how to use the brush was the watery/runny problem even though paint, distance, and pressure seemed optiimal. If you have a compressure without a tank or tank that is too small, and you have been brushing for longer than 30 minutes, the compressor gets quite hot and the air coming out is warming up. This seems to change the properties of the paint and you could get some condensation/moisture which runs through the line ending up on your model.
To keep the tip from gumming up, I keep a small cup of windex out that I periodically dip the end of the brush in. A gentle wipe with a bit of windex saturated kleenex also seemed very effective.
