I'm looking for a red that is the same color as GW's Blood Red paint. I am attempting to use the paint for my Necrons, but the paint is weird in that is never goes on smoothly, a bit like the skull white does. Thinning the paint is, so far, pointless, as the paint is strangely thin, and adding water makes it more thin. As of now, it takes a few coats to get it right, yet the chaos black goes on fine with one coat. Does anyone know how a good water:paint ratio for GWs blood red? or a paint that is similar in color and goes on better?

Pretty much any bright red will require multiple thinned down coats to look good. I like the Vallejo paints, but I still water them down almost 1:1 and give it a few layers.

That is the nature of red....the pigment is so saturated with color that it messes with the ratios of binders to pigments.

As already been stated, mulitple thin coats and patience. however if you find a nice red primer, like army painter, that will make applying the red much easier.

Basecoat in the Foundation red then add a coat of Blood red? That's how I do any bright reds...

If you do i 1:2 mixture of The Foundation Red and Blood Red you will get a very nice paint that will cover really well. Then you just go back in with straight Blood Red to do a thin layer to brighten up the mixture.

I tend to mix my lighter color paints with just a bit of the foundation paints to make them more opaque.

Good point, Resv - if planning bulk red models like BA or Speed Freeks vehicles, it would be well worth mixing a few bottles.

I hadn't even thought of mixing the foundation and the regular. Although I did manage to find a great red sraypaint, it's too glossy for my tastes. Thanks for the tips guys!
