Hey all,
I'm trying to recreate the battle for macrgg and im trying to figure out how I can cut some of my costs to do it. Right now im looking at buying two 6x4 games tables to make an 8x6 table. I was thinking of buying the "Imperial fortress wall" but its up there in price. I want to also make a city within the walls of the fortress. I already have a few of the Imperial city pieces i.e Sanctum Imperialis ect. Then inside the city I want to make the Ultramarine Temple / Fort where Marneus Calgar is tellin the Ultrasmurfs what is what. outside the main walls I want some trenches and barbed wire and defenses. I figure I can fit the Ultramarine's gak on half the board maybe taking up a bit more. Then I want to make the rest of the terrain have hills and mountains so the other player's can hide units and maneuver.
So now you know the whole Idea, im looking for some alternatives to the 700 euro wall and some easy to place terrain for some depth to the board, or easy ways to make these pieces.
I do understand some of the more know how fans of the Ultrasmurfs fluff may have a problem w / layout of the Terrain so please let me know of any ideas/ helpful suggestions to help me make this as accurate as possible.

You going to need to put Imperial Guard in it to, they helped defend Macragg.
Ultramar raises IG regiments as well, they are often very well decorated.

Can you give more info on where the 700 number came from?
Assuming thats all on terrain you can get a REALLY cheaper set for less then that
Even with (OMFG HMBC) GW kits (j/k HMBC!)

Use LEGOS! It's cheap, and you can reuse them again and again and again.......

The Battlefor Macragge was fought over the entire planet. Trying to do the entire thing in one big game is impossible. But you could play it out like a campaign.
Have the initial planetfall, then have various battles as the Tyranids make their way to the polar defense fortresses. Particularly, the defense of Cold Steel Ridge, making sure you use the Swarmlord and Calgar, and try to make it Apocalypse sized.
Then have the battle for the southern polar fortress, (which would take a little creative terrain building, as it was fought underground in the tunnels beneath the fortress) and finally the northern polar fortress, with the Ultramarines fighting the Tyranids back into the fortress, and finding the destroyed 1st company.

Legos look fine, unless you use crazy colored ones.
Remember though! Macragg is an ice ball of a planet! Use Ice themed camo for the IG and the walls.

Yes, one big game would be impossible. I do like the campaign idea, in fact I like all of your ideas. But as you said the southern polar fortress would be a pain to make. If you include IG, be sure to have Earthshaker cannons built into the Fortress, or at least on top of it. Use Basilisks as well.

SonyDigitalHD wrote:Will do, I have some IG buddys who have too many tanks. That should be an easy task to complete Glad I could help. The Ultramar Guardsmen will use the Ultramarines crest, the horse shoe. It's pretty easy to paint/find decals for. yet again, Legos are your best bet on money saving, they are easy to customize. I have a landing platform I use to house my Valkyries when I'm at home, it's made of Legos.

Macragge isn't an Ice World, only the polar regions and high mountains have ice on them. The majority of the world is actually either temperate or a mountainous waste land.

For city defenses, you will probably want some sort of wall with gun emplacements plus a series of outer bastions and Aegis defense lines. have the city behind have a bunch of civilian buildings.
The Polar defenses would probably best be a couple of Fortresses of Redemption, some bastions, and lots of Aegis defense lines.
as for how to cut costs, the wall could be made pretty cheaply with foam and wirecutters. You will need some good painting skills to make it look decent, but Youtube is your friend here.

I misspoke, I meant because he was doing it in a Polar region.

If you are doing a campaign I suggest the BfM box set. See if you can find it on Ebay. Good start for opening skirmishes.

Models shouldnt be a problem. I just added some models to my collection, it puts me around 250 Tyrannids, and a little over 160 SM.
