Subject: Old Zogwort, ultimate troll?

Hello fellow boyz, I was recently reading the ork codex just for fun and read over Old Zogwort again. I have seen proposed lists using Ghaz, Grotsnik, and Wazdakka as HQs but never Zogwort. In fact, I don't think I ever see a Weirdboy in an ork list.
Now I know it is virtually impossible to make a competitive list using a Weirdboy/Warphead, just because you are giving up such precious other HQ options and spending a wad of points. That aside...
Zogwort comes in at 145 points so he is the cheapest of the unique HQs. He is 60 points more than a standard Warphead. For that extra 60 pts, you get +1 to toughness, +1 wound, +1 leadership, but you lose some stuff like all BS, -1 strength, -1 attack. Those losses don't really matter at all but the gains definitely help. The reason for that is, his wargrear Nest of Vipers which deals an additional D6 attacks at Initiative 4, and also stipulates that all of Zogworts attacks are poisoned therefore wounding on 2+. So that strength 3 has no meaning really, and the lower attack number on his profile doesn't either since you will always get at least 3 attacks and as many as 9 since he benefits from furious charge. BS never matters since his psychic ranged attacks auto-hit.
So on the charge he would have WS 5, Initiative 5, 4-9 attacks, all wounding on 2+. This is all amidst some various Psyker powers that can be really devastating, like generating a Waaagh!, giving his unit +1 attack, or two very good shooting attacks frazzle (blast, pinning, 24'', str 6 ap 3) and zzap (melta, 36'', str 10 ap 2). These combined make him sound pretty effective against MEQ. Mind you he is no Ghazkull, but for 145 pts that is pretty decent capability especially in CC.
My favorite part about him though, and the reason why I think he is a total troll and you could just throw a wrench in your opponents army, is his rule "Zogworts Curse". If an enemy IC is within 18'' of Zogwort, you can have a roll-off as a psychc power, and if you roll higher then that opponent's IC is turned into an angry Squig permanently! This would be absolutely hilarious against enemy lists that focus around a special IC, and I think just having Zogwort in a list to do something like that is grade A trollin'
I'm not sure how I would incorporate him into a list. A big boyz mob would guarantee fearless leadership, but a nobz squad would mean you could be hitting at Initiative 4 or better on the charge with the unit. Anyways, just something I was thinkin about. Your opinions, thoughts?

I don't play Orks myself but I do have to say the couple of games where my friend ran 2 warp heads in Wagons were some of my most enjoyable games.
From what I've seen of them they look like a really fun unit to play. I believe he was using the pair of them to achieve some sort of multiple or turn 1 Waag trickery. He only rolled the melta power though but it turned out to be pretty effective.
After the games he did admit the he really missed the KFF on his wagons though.

I've used him once. Tried and failed to use the curse, but from then on my opponent was focussed on keeping away and killing him. I had him in a wagon for mobility. Seriously, no-one will send a decent IC within range of him.

so zogwarts curse is only for zogwort? an ork player used that on me using a weirdboy! they failed greatly because of shadow in the warp. if it only works on IC why use it on me as at the time my list did not have any.
Is it not even a psychic power?
is it even for the weirdboys?

A normal warphead does not have that curse, only Zogwort. It is a Psychic power that you choose to use rather than rolling to see what Psychic power he will use. Sounds like your opponent was either mistaken or cheating!

Yeah. The best units are those that do both of course. Your opponent is rightly terrified of them. Stompas come to mind.
But the psych impact thing is important. Some units can win you a game without doing a point of damage.

Zogwort is good fun. I actually run him in my meganobz/Ghaz list sometimes.
If you want to be TFG, I'm pretty sure you can just spam his curse every turn, if you want to avoid rolling his powers. It just reads something like: pick a target IC, if within 18" roll against your opponent, etc.
...Or, you can troll even harder. Bring Zogwort and Grotsnik and a ton of boys. Cybork the boys. If Grotsnik is about to die, or if you just want to get rid of him for some reason, squig him. As a squig, he's under your opponent's control as per RAW. He should probably be within assault range, and this enables you to assault him and consolidate with a mob of boys. You don't net any kill points, but I'm quite certain you don't lose any either.

I am a new ork player and also read Zogwort and thought it was worth a try. A few questios for anyone who has used him. Firstly if that IC is within a squad can you still do the curse? Secondly does this curse work on monstrous creatures?
Thanks in advance,

Hmm. You can certainly use it if they're in a squad. The rules seem to suggest that any model with the "Independent character" unit type is fair game.
Remember that the curse doesn't kill the model, so you don't get kill points for any scenarios that use them. Your opponent can hop the squig away into a hiding place and leave it there. As far as I can tell, there's nothing to stop it contesting objectives, either.
And make sure you have a squig model. I used the one that's sitting on a banner, and turned the banner top into part of a scenic base.

As long as it has the "Independent Character" rule, yes. Upgrade character, no.

If it is a friendly game warpheads and zogwort are two of the units in this game that I find to be the most fun to use. I've only gotten his curse to work once, but it was absolutely hilarious. Plus, nothing is funnier than declaring a wagghh every turn of the game (just happened to me last night)

As stated, they have to have the Independent Character special rule, or they are not a valid target. No MC that I know of has it, though I don't know all the units out there.

The Necron Ctan used to be IC monstrous creatures, and squiggable, but not any more.
It's possible for MC's to be IC's, but i don't think there are are currently any.
There are a good few SC's that aren't IC's, more's the pity :( Automatically Appended Next Post: The Curse is a psychic power, so it can be stopped by anythign that stops a psychic power.
Malys, for example, is regrettably unsquiggable

I managed to do that with my Zogwort last week also! You're from the UK, maybe it was the same game?! haha
But yeah, Zogwort is tons o' fun. 1st game I ever played (have only been playing for a short while tbh) On the 1st turn I managed to roll 'ere we go!' while Zogwort was in a group of 20 boyz and managed to DS across the table right infront of a squad of eldar guardians, much to the shock and amusement of everybody.
On the other hand though, one of my gaming friends roll's SW's and informed me Njal can nullify Zogworts curse, and with the SW's being a b*tch to beat already, has made me reconsider taking him :(

It is a psychic ability, so I'm sure it can be. That's the drawback as most marine armies have a libby and therefore psychic hood. But, if you are just looking for a laugh and a story it's worth the risk.

Couldn't squig mephy anyway.
He's not an IC :( A lot of the more annoyingly over-uber SC's aren't.
Zog is fun, but against a Farseer he kills himself regularly, and SM armies always have psyker-blockers.
Agaisnt other orks he can be hilarious though:
My favourite moment was Zog turning my friend's Ghazgkull into a squig, and then being charged and eaten by said squig

I love Zogwort. Yes, he is not conventional, but he is a beast in CC. Just don't expect him to survive very long as his save is a 6+.
I've primarily used him with the Mad Dok in a unit of 'ard boyz leading the charge of a Green Tide list. It made for some very ... interesting ... games. Its more competitve than you would think, but don't plan on dominating any tournaments with that combo either. Automatically Appended Next Post: Reckoner wrote:So on the charge he would have WS 5, Initiative 5, 4-9 attacks, all wounding on 2+. Check the FAQ. IC's attached to Snikrot's unit get to use his rule to come in off any table edge. The more common variant is putting Ghaz in there with them.

Definitely a cheaper version of the Ghaz variant. This would be quite fun though because you can bet your opponent would keep his IC in the middle as far away from the table edge as possible. But with the Outflank he would have to have his IC at least 24'' from any table edge which isn't always possible. Automatically Appended Next Post: He should have d6 from the Nest, plus his base of 2 or 3?

His base attack is 2, so on the charge he would get +1 attack. Then he would get a bonus D6 attacks. In the codex it states that all the attacks are poisoned, not just the bonus.

I actually wrote about Warphead shooting last week. 36 to 51% chance to hit with a shooting attack. The chance to use a shooting attack goes up with your choice of re-rolls (from a roll of 1 or all but 2 and 3).

That would be a waste of 1-4 turns of his psychic abilities, which is why you take him in the first place.
