The things you people consider to be 'news' never ceases to amaze me. The Woman With the Terrible Facelift was ranting about 'homosexual propaganda', yet the only reason she is on TV is as a result of homophobic extreme right-wing propaganda. What possible reason could there be for people like that to be given a platform? It's not like their views are held by even a significant minority. Religious bigots seem to get a disproportionate amount of opportunity to display their hate-filled and ignorant 'views' in the States. How many gay news anchors are there? How many programmes on major networks discuss LGBT issues seriously? I'm willing to bet that it's a tiny fraction of the amount of time given to the American Taliban.
Most people, even the religious, just live and let live, and for me, that is what America should be about - not small-minded medieval persecution. You were the future once.

Now if you could get that through the Conservatives brain pan. If they don't stand up now and start bitching about Ellen, they may wake up tomorrow with gay children. At least that's how it seems they
are acting.

I never understood that mentality. What exactly are you protecting kids from?

When you say, "What exactly are you protecting kids from? ", you are not talking to me, are you? I don't think so, but just making sure.

I think your looking into to a bit to much. The vast majority of Americans are like you described, live and let live. The only reason this gak gets on the TV, is the same reason Howard Stern is such a popular radio personality. He pisses people off, and offends and because of that, he gets a ton of air play. Same kind of thing here. The crap your talking about, is pretty much just crap, but it offends and pisses people off, so they listen to get offended. Sounds stupid I know, but next time you pass by a bad car wreck, keep your eyes and attention away from it while creeping past it. I bet you wont make it

You're a supporter of the NHS, therefore you're an enabler of death panels and a communist. They don't need your extremist opinion.

I wouldn't mind if the NHS became half as good as Private care personally. Maybe then I wouldn't have lost a family member due to doctor and nurse neglect. The Americans have the right healthcare system.

I agree with him of course… but at the same time I can’t help but think that he cares more about the rights of corporations than the rights of homosexuals, and in this case they just happened to coincide.
I also think it’s sad that the only expression that woman can manage on her nerve dead face is mild annoyance.
Mr Hyena wrote:I wouldn't mind if the NHS became half as good as Private care personally.
We have the option to use either, should we wish. That seems fair, though the NHS is very obviously in need of reform.
Though that's not what this thread's about. It's about being surprised that a news personality would defend a fellow human being against some of the most reckless (and inexplicably tolerated) hate imaginable.
Surtur wrote:He goes off and says some stupid things, and then he does pieces like this.
In order for his shtick to work, he has to generally say reasonable things. If all he said were outrageous, soundbitey things all the time, than he'd be Ann Coulter; and who takes her seriously anymore?

Those aren't Steve Buscemi eyes, but they're close. Well, in that picture anyway.
What amuses me about this thread is that Bill has, on several occasions, taken positions that would surprise people that relentlessly hate on him without ever watching his show.

Haters gon' hate.
I have enormous respect for what he did. He was a middle of the road journalist, out there doing it live, who realized that journalism is for the birds and the real money is in being a political pundit. He's built himself an enormous empire doing just that, always walking that razor line of being reasonable while still being relevant without ever falling over the edge of too bland (and getting boring) or too ridiculous (like Glenn Beck). He does a tremendous job, doing what he does.

I remember when Bill O'Reilly was the crazy one. He's just stood still, and this whole new generation of crazies have sprung up to the right of him.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

If it would make you feel better we could dig up examples of people in the US dieing due to neglect in hospitals as well. That kind of thing isn't isolated to NHS by a long shot.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
Albatross wrote: What possible reason could there be for people like that to be given a platform?
So O'Reilly can emphasize his libertarian tendencies.
That being said, her argument was better. Anyone can protest anything anyone else does. Though I'm not sure many people are going to stop shopping at J.C. Penney in the same way that many people who hate Walmart will still indulge in those low, low prices (and smiley faces).
Albatross wrote:

Maybe not in the UK, but in the US it certainly is.
Albatross wrote:

They're (people who oppose gay marriage/homosexuality) not all religious bigots, or even bigots, though many of them are bigots, and many of the bigots are religious.
That being said, people who oppose a company employing an openly homosexual person as a spokesperson are probably bigots.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Although I was going to go with Bill Lumbergh.
This clip is 'meh.' I don't understand the hate for Ellen, she isn't a very outspoken voice in the 'gay rights' movement. Now if it had been Rosie O'Donnell, well that's another story.
