I'm still fairly uncertain of this rule and being the one who knows most of the rules in my group of newbies we keep running into cheesy problems with this.
Example 1:
5 normal spacemarines
1 plasma
1 Sargent
Take 4 wounds...how do you distribute these? can you just remove 4 of the marines? do you have to roll 1 for plasma, 1 for Sargent and 2 for the marines?
Example 2:
1 multiwound model (IC)
1 Sargent
5 marines
1 flamer
1 heavy bolter
Take lets say 5 wounds. can the IC and sargent aborb al the hits? how are these hits distributed?
Thank you for your replies. Every little bit helps

In either example you would distribute 1 wound each to as many models as you have wounds. Whch models take the wounds is up to you.
In your example 2, you could not put all 5 wounds onto the IC and sergeant, as the wounds have to be distributed evenly. Every model in the unit would have to receive a wound before anyone could receive a second.

regarding example 2: the IC, Sargent, flamer, heavy bolter and one marine would each take a wound, if there were more wounds scored they would go across the remaining marines before going through the second wave?

If you want to distribute them that way, sure. Alternatively, you could just allocate the 5 wounds to the 5 regular marines rather than risking your 'special' models.
Again, which models take the wounds is entirely up to you, so long as they are distributed evenly.

Correct. No model can receive a second wound until every model in the unit has taken one. Altho I'd probably put them all on the regular Marines instead of any of my 'specials'.

You allocated wounds equally. At this point your only *requirement* is to put 1 wound on every model before any model can get a second allocated to them.
You then group allocated wounds into groups of like models and a pool of their allocated wounds - at this point you start caring what you have been wounded by (Strength, AP)
